I know this could look a little odd coming from me (HDDFreak), but when I build my new system, how much of a performance increase would i find by upgrading to a cheap-ish SATA drive instead of using an old 7200rpm P-ATA one? I'm wondering as I would rather buy a hard-drive later rather than sooner as I don't store much data on my computer that I would be grumpy losing. Any thoughts or answers would be appreciated.

i was looking into this and as far as i can see the seagate 7900.10s (perpendicular recording) are performing very well with a 250gb model around the £50 mark it seems well worth the upgrade and you Should notice a much sharper system over a Pata drive

the interface doesn't actually make a difference to performance, it's just that the manufacturers are releasing newer drives with SATA interfaces, thus SATA drives being faster since their the newer DRIVE technology, not interface technology, and that's the only reason why it's better to get a SATA drive.

Also I think most of the Core 2 Duo mobo only have 1 set of ATA connectors, i.e., 2 devices, so if you get an ATA drive, you'll only be able to put in one optical drive and have to run you optical and hard drive on the same cable.
