Just a quick question my friend has a furnance dragon 6(r)(r)
(r) Affinity for artifacts. flying. When Furnance Dragon comes
into play, if you played it from your hand remove all
artifacts from the game.
The question is is it all artifacts from play or just all
artifacts in the game. She said it was all artifacts in the
whole game because it didn't specify play like other cards do.
I said it was from play because it was supposed to be just
basic understanding. It would be greatly appreciated if you
could clear this whole thing up thanks.

Quick tip: Copy/Paste from Oracle to make sure that you have the
correct text and so that you don't need to type it all out. It's at
<http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dci/oracle>.

,----[ Oracle ]
| Furnace Dragon
| {6}{R}{R}{R}
| Creature -- Dragon
| 5/5
| Affinity for artifacts (This spell costs {1} less to play for each
| artifact you control.)
| Flying
| When Furnace Dragon comes into play, if you played it from your
| hand, remove all artifacts from the game.

It takes all artifacts in play and removes them from the game. Things
generally only mean in play unless they say otherwise or could only
work in another zone.

Plus, an "artifact" can only exist in play. Anywhere else, it's just
an "artifact card". (The distinction may seem subtle, but it's how the
game works.)

The rules specify play.

217.5b A spell or ability affects and checks only the in-play zone
unless it specifically mentions a player or another zone. Permanents
exist only in the in-play zone.

I see no specific mention of artifacts in any other zone on Furnace
Dragon.

Does it _say_ it can affect cards that are not in play, by any means? No? Then
it can't; by default, effects apply ONLY to permanents in play, unless
something on the card specifies otherwise (or in the rules).

It doesn't need to "specify from play", because that's the default. She may
have been overexposed to Portal cards and their "reminder text"; effects only
affect permanents in play, they don't have to say so. They DO have to say so
to affect something NOT in play (such as cards in your hand, or another
player). 416.2 goes over this.

You're correct, though it's more of "that's the default for effects; they
have to say otherwise to override the default".

Furnace Dragon can't do anything to cards in anyone's hand, library, or
graveyard, or to artifact spells that happen to be on the stack, or to
artifact cards in the removed-from-game, ante, or phased-out zones, because
it doesn't SAY it can affect things in any of those zones.
