So im already planning a 2nd build, just decided today that I would investigate a little what my 2nd pc will be like. Will the 1151 socket have any upcoming 6core or 8 core processors? I read about Kaby Lake, however they will be dual and quad core. Reason I am asking is I am thinking of building an X99 setup for a 6950k when theyre released (about to buy the ASUS Sabertooth X99 mobo) and was wondering if the new 1151 socket would ever get more on the enthusiast level with more cores? Is Kaby Lake supposed to be the new Skylake refresh? I wouldnt mind just upgrading my processor if they came out with a 6 or 8 core for the 1151, if not I am just going to purchase the x99 board for the 6950k and have 2 great pcs to play with.

6 or 8 cores is x99 platform only. LGA 1151 will have another generation of CPUs but it will only be another very small bump, perhaps even smaller than skylake.

You should go for x99 as they will usually have 3 or 4 generations of processor on it.

Originally cannonlake was scheduled for 2016 with 10nm architecture but that has been delayed until 2017, so in the meantime kaby lake will be a filler. It is basically a more refined version of their current skylake line of cpu's. I wouldn't wait for it. I would go with x99 for quad channel memory and the extreme line of intel CPU's. Also I wouldn't buy a motherboard until you are getting the rest of your components because things change and you might end up wanting something different.

Intel's "Tick-Tock" model has now become "tick-tick-tock" I guess ;)

thought so, was hoping more from the 1151 chipset, not that i regret my 6700k purchase, because I am absolutely satisfied, but I just feel like im missing out on the multiple core aspect of my enthusiast mind. :p. Ill likely wait since I just read that manufacturers will likely come out with new boards once the new x99 line drops. I will likely use my 6700k for gaming and the 6950k for my rendering and graphic design projects.

I do have a little buyers remorse now though after reading the upcoming cpus for 1151. I should have just went with the other devil on my shoulder but now ill just have to give into both :)

Also wondering, in the GPU aspect for mt next build, will pascal offer something better then the 980TI? I love mine and will likely get a 2nd one for my skylake build once sli optimization is guaranteed compatible and hopefully stackable.

...Yes :D

Pascal should be pretty sweet... HBM2 is rumored to be on the newer cards. As for stackable VRAM I don't know, that's more of a software change than a hardware one that dx12 may address. Pascal will most likely be ALOT more powerful than 9xx series cards and meant more for 1440p/4K but I guess we'll see this is all just speculation.

I am hearing Cannonlake MIGHT offer a 6-8 core cpu for the 1151 mainstream audience. But that wont be for another 2 years it seems since cannonlakes 10nm got pushed back. Thats ok though, I think I will just go x99 and grab the 6950k. Thanks everyone.

I'm not expecting too much from Pascal because it's mostly HBM and the die shrink. It will essentially be the same maxwell architecture otherwise. Compare this to AMD's polaris which is taking an experienced approach to HBM, heavily revising their architecture, and going to a smaller manufacturing processes than Nvidia (14nm vs 16nm). Just due to using the superior manufacturing process, it'll give AMD cards a power consumption advantage and allow them to stuff more onto each card.
