Future-proofing with 2x 8GB GTX 970's in SLI?

Hey guys, I'm kind of new to this GPU stuff so I'd like to ask for your advice on something. Right now I have a Strix GTX 970, and I'm kind of upset about this 3.5GB VRAM thing. I heard that the 8GB version of the 970 is coming out soon, so I was thinking about returning my current 970 and buying an 8GB version so that in a few years I can buy another one and run SLI. I assume this setup is going to last much longer than a single GTX 980, maybe for another 5 years or so? What do you guys think?

If you really want to future proof, buy two 8gb R9 290x. Those will last MUCH longer than 2 8gb 970s will. The 970 only has a 256bit memory bus. It'll never utilize 8gb VRAM. Just like the 4gb GTX 760s

Unless your gaming more than 1080p res, you should be fine for now with 3.5gb. For future and new gen games though its demanding more and more vram.

"Future proofing" anything regarding technology is impossible. Buy something new when your performance suffers and you can no longer accept it.

If you always keep in mind the saying "future proofing", then it will be never ending upgrade of components.. You don't always have to buy the new technology. As long as you can game with good fps in the desired setting, then you should be fine for now. Who knows what lies in the future

Can I run 2 R9 290X's with a 750 Watt PSU? I have an i7 4790k and a Maximus VII HERO.

For a 750w psu, id rather sli 2 970 and would still have a lot of headroom for cpu overclocking

I can't blame you for feeling that way but if you go for 290x xfire, you have to upgrade your psu as it shows below total system w/ 290x consumes 750w at load
