I am planning my next build in 2-3 years time which I will work towards. To save on costs, I will not be buying parts all at once, instead buying whatever is on sale upgrading it to my current system and eventually upgrade everything to become a new machine. My goal is to only buy CPU & Motherboard, GPU, as my only upgrades, other parts will not require frequent upgrading. In other words, futureproofing my case, RAM, PSU, coolers, fans, optical drives, HDD/SSD.

SInce DDR4 is the trend for Intel, getting a set of dual channel kits will last me for a long time.
A good, powerful modular PSU will last me for a very long time until it wears out
A spacious case with adequate cooling will basically last forever
SSDs will eventually wear out too, but will still last very long if I get a high enough capacity
CPU cooler may work because new sockets do not have dramatic change in size, and will give me plenty of headroom for overclocking if I get a water cooler
optical drives and fans also last forever unless it bails out.

If my analogy is correct, I will try to get the best of these future-proofable parts so I will not have to worry about upgrading it in the future. I would appreciate if you have any advice/opinion.

Nothing is really future proof in the PC world, because things change so rapidly. But historically, things like cases, PSU's and storage evolve a little more slowly. as you said. The thing you can do is buy the latest high end hardware, as the low end stuff becomes obsolete more quickly. For example, high end quad cores from 6 or 7 years ago are still decent performers (i7 920/950), but dual cores from that era are virtually extinct. Big changes coming this year in graphics and storage, it will be interesting to see how things shape up.

there a few issue with trying to build like your thinking. one is what will intel and amd mb be using as cpu chips. intel has posted there going to cpu that are soilder onto the mb in 2016/2017.

also in two years we may be not using ddr ram but hba memory on system.
nvidia and amd have been dropping new gpu every 12-18 months.
your better off opeing up a savings account and placing the money in it. when your ready to buy look at the review that are out then.
