Ok basically i want to know which of these would be better for gaming it has to be the bulldozer series unfortunately but im going to go ahead with it since i've had no suggestions for better CPU and where i can buy it, my budget is £300 can squeeze to around 310-315 but thats all but what i want to know is which of them is better for gaming because they all run at different clock speeds etc, i had a problem with the company on ebay but alot of them are the same company under different name and im struggling to find a computer for my budget and also i have to spend around £50 for a good PSU to power my HD 6870 someone please help me decide a CPU to go with my HD, i play games like WOW, Call of Duty BO:Zombies etc

any suggestions would be great, thanks

6200 or 8120. If you are into overclocking, the 8120 would be better, but its only a 3.1 ghz stock cpu, if your not into that, the 6200 base is 3.8 ghz and would be faster at stock. the 4100 is only half a cpu and just for cheap only builds.

what country you are in would be helpful in trying to find a price.

im in the UK i been looking around and that fx 6100 is good bang for your buck and it's between i3-i5 performance i mean i shouldn't imagine a massive difference would i?

6100 is a 3.3 ghz part, the 6200 is 3.8 ghz. for the most you won't tell much difference between the 6xxx and 8xxx until you get into crossfire graphics.

the ones i plan on buying are already overclocked i've seen a few already at 4ghz cause im not confident enough at the moment to do my own overclocking so i tend to leave that for others haha 😀

Are you sure you can't get the new piledriver CPUs from AMD? They are about 10-15% better than the bulldozer series. The FX 6300 is better than the i3-3220 for gaming, so that might also be a viable option.

Agreed! But I think most of us just considered that he needed a new MOBO aswell for that. Which would be pretty expensive compared to the FX-6300.

If you're fixing a completely new computer together then get one of these i5-3470/i5-3570/i5-3570k. Those are some of the best CPUs you can get for gaming at the price, you can also see the performance of them in the benchmarks I posted.

If you already have an am3 motherboard, then the best gaming choice for the money is a 960t, if you cannot find that then a 965/955 BE, and a aftermarket cpu cooler you ARE going to need to overclock.



They should be significantly cheaper, and have better/equal gaming performance than the FX line.


If you need to get a motherboard, then a i5 setup would be ideal, as all the games you listed are CPU hungry.

Sorry - wasn't entirely clear why it had to be Bulldozer? It's not the best choice for gaming. But for a whole new system you'd be best off going Intel. In CPU-intensive games you'll get ~40% better performance with the i5 3470 than the X4 980. Around 50% better if you're looking specifically at 1080p. Even more if you play below 1920x1080. Piledriver would deliver 20-25% better performance than X4, and Bulldozer would be comparable as Maxage says. Can post benchmarks if you're interested?

thanks for your help guys i'll see what i can find but as i said i would have had a 965 BE if the seller hadn't pissed around for the past week and half and only replied when i came to a dispute and most the games i play with my montior is max at 1280x1024 so it's not like it's mass power hungry on my GPU either

Low resolutions actually become less dependent on GPU and more on CPU - though you're typically looking at high framerates anyway at that point. At 1280x1024 you shouldn't need masses of muscle to be gaming on it for a while.

i don't have the monitor for the high resolution most people play i intend to upgrade at some point but the tower comes first

Fair enough! You certainly do get a performance advantage with low resolutions. Crank up that AA and it's still good. I gamed happily on 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 for years until I finally found a widescreen flat-panel I wanted to keep.

can i ask though do you see much difference in speed between the FX CPU's? my budget is kinda about £250 cause i need a good PSU to go with my card ofc but i was just wondering cause i've seen many FX series but which to choose is a different matter, Fx4100//6100/6200/6300/8100/8120 i could go on but i don't think i should

Hehe well the 8350 isn't too expensive, but you'd get near enough the same real-world gaming performance from an 8320 or even 6300. Most important thing is Piledriver over Bulldozer. I'd take a 6300 over an 8150 any day.
