October 17th. I have no clue wether this is old or new news but I'll detail why I feel this is true.

I live in the United Arab Emirates, a small but westernized country in the Middle East. I've been saving up to buy an fx-53 based CPU for about a month and was waiting for the yearly computer fair around here called Gitex. I ordered an Fx-53 (as well as other parts) there and it was scheduled to arrive tomorrow for me to buy. However, I just received a phone call from the dealer who is telling me that if I want he will uprade my purchase of the fx-53 to the fx-55 on october 17th if I'm willing to wait (for $80 US).

Now, I don't see how this can be new news since its coming from the U.A.E and I sincerely doubt sources here are more knowledgable than ones in the U.S.A.. If this is old news, then sorry, if not then I have to say I'm a little surprised.

With that out of the way, I'd like to ask a relatively "noobish" question. I know that when chips launch, they generally aren't as good overclockers as the last in the line of their predecessors. I'm wondering what you guys would do. Go for a proven late model of an FX-53 or a brand new (and relatively untested) 90nm Fx-55. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Its news to me, Ive been wondering this lately. THanks for the info.

I was wondering cuz I wanted to get an fx53 cheaper, but now I realize these things dont get much cheaper lol, certainly not below $500, but I was still wondering.

No problem, Everything I've written is true, but take it with a grain of salt as no where ive seen online has mentioned a release date that I've noticed (If anyone has seen one, I'd like to know if it validates or debunks what my supplier said)

Edit: Terrible grammar
Edited by Gimperific on 10/06/04 02:30 PM.

That sounds promising, heh. Does anyone have any ideas on which route to take (proven Fx-53 or unknown Fx-55)? I'm heavily leaning towards the Fx-55 right now, but I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks.

For the money of either, since neither is cheap, and it is one or the other, no question, The FX-55.

Personally, I'd go with the FX55. It will be the hot top chip until the FX57 or possibly A64 4400 outdo it. And $80 isn't much when you are talking $800+ anyways. The FX55 is being released at the same price as the FX53(S940) and possibly the S939 also, so they are making money on the deal, but you win too. The FX53 will disappear after the FX55 comes out, but it seems the A64 4000+ looks to be the same specs as the FX53. Man you lucky stiff, I'd love to have an FX55 soon.

The FX-55 will not have a lot of overhead for overclocking and since the FX chips are unlock. You should keep your FX-53 and run it at 13x200=2.6GHz, you will have your home-made FX-55!

AMD will not release any faster A64@130nm. So the FX-55 is theorically the less overclockable A64 on the market. It works at high speed, it is DUAL-CHANNEL and there 1Meg of cache on it!

Hmm,

TheRod,

"The FX-55 will not have a lot of overhead for overclocking"

While I know that release chips generally are bad overclockers compared to later steppings, I'm still thinking an Fx-55 should be able to overclock to higher levels than an Fx 53.

"You should keep your FX-53 and run it at 13x200=2.6GHz, you will have your home-made FX-55! "

I don't have an Fx-53, I was thinking of buying one. I'm no where near dumb enough to spend $800 to upgrade to a processor only 200Mhz higher than mine, heh. I see your point, BUT I'd like to mention one thing. I will definatley be overclocking whatever processor I end up getting. If I get the Fx-53 I'll take it as high as I can, if I get the Fx-55 I'll do the same.

Basically, my exact question is this. What do the members of this board think will give me a higher mhz rating. An overclocked Fx-53 or an overclocked Fx-55|? For those who skimmed my earlier posts I'll try to clarify why I'm so confused.

The Fx-53 is on proven techonology (the 130nm core), the Fx-55 is on new technology (the 90nm core). Reviews of the recent 90nm A64 chips(not the FX-55, haven't seen any reviews for that yet) have varied. All the publications agree they consume less power, but they are divided over the CPU temp. If someone could speculate as to which chip would probably give me a better overall PC, I'd appreciate it. Opinions welcome seeing as that is pretty much all anyone has to go on right now.

Thanks for the help by the way, heh

No question of the 55, even less if released on 90nm...

Pauldh,

Sorry man, I didn't notice your post. Thanks for the article, I'm confused now, s the FX-55 130nm or 90? I thought it would be onn 90nm, but the article says it now looks like it will be the other way. ARGH, either way I'll find out tomorrow when I talk to the guy face to face I'm assuming you recommend the Fx-55 then, heh. Thanks for the advice. Definatley leaning towards the FX-55 now.

WRONG! The FX-55 is a 130nm CPU, it's not a 90nm.

What mobo are you getting?
If your original setup was to be s940, and the new setup is s939, I would have real mixed feelings. The memory for s940 is much more expensive

Small update if anyone cares. I went to the supplier today and hehanded me a specification sheet. He also confirmed that he will DEFINATLEY have the chip on the 18th (not 17th as I wrote initially, sorry got confused. I'm pretty sure its true now.
