R9600Pro, I have one and I LOVE mine, but not in THAT way.

The only thing on par with the R9600Pro is the FX5600Ultra Rev.2 and then it depends on what you play.

For your choices R9600Pro.

The 9600 pro is easily the best choice out of those.

The ultra 5600 pro revision 2 is a good card also, and superior IMHO even for the extra $50 or whatever street price differences come to.

Remember if you are switching brands in a system from ATI/NV already, you will have to reformat!
This is one of my small reasons I dont want to switch to ATI atm. Esp with an option such as the 5600ultra rev2.

I used to format every 6months but find it annoying as heck anymore.

If you are limiting your choices to strictly those cards, and you have nvidia right now, i'd still recommend the 9600pro even with a format.
otherwise take a good look at the ultra rev2.

Why reformat? Could you just delete hardware and dump the NVidia Drivers? Then install the Ati?

Ive never been brave enough to attempt but everyone on the boards say this is so.

Spending $150+ on a video card and not being aware you might have to reformat is IMO a major disservice in many ways.
I have way to many d/l's, way to many games, custom settings... im a fan of ghosting but that doesnt really fix this problem as theres no way around a complete format/reinstall.
If anyone does have a true fix, I'd be glad to hear it, and use it myself... then I'd prob finally order a 9700 nonpro instead of waiting to find a true 5600ultra rev2!

I personally have gone from Ati to Nvidia and back again on the same system and have had no problems.

On one system I did, but I simply removed the proper references to Nvidia's drivers in the registry and cleaned it up properly and was good to go.

This is stuff you should definitely try before throwing up your hands and reformatting.

I've had XP on one system since it came out and haven't had to reformat yet. Two video cards later I'm still running smoothly. Just take care of your system, remove those programs in your system tray as well as spy/adware, and pay attention to what's happening. You should be OK.

Any one know anything about the FX5600 with 256mb?? I was thinking about getting one off of ebay but cant find any coverage on the 256 version.

Yes, I think that the 9600 ATI is a good card but it still won't play direct X9 games too well. It seems all the cheaper cards are really left in the performance dust by clipping the pixel pipeline to 4 and memory path from 256 to 128. So all the cards are somewhat disappointing to me.

The jump from 4/128 to 8/256 is HUGE in frame rates, making a 8/256 the only long term strategy. So, with that said I'd buy a good directX 8.1 card and just wait for DX9 performance to cost ratios to be improved unless you can spring for a 8/256 solution.

The Albetron 5600 Turbo, though, is a great 5600 card for Nvidia fans with excellent oveclocking ability and is a really well built piece of hardware. Any body have a fovorite 9600 card design to mention for him? The Sapphire brand seems to collect good marks on the high end ATI cards. Are the 9600 models just as nice?

Still, I wouldn't get excited about DOOM III on any 4/128 card in full directX 9 rendering, really.

All the 256mb 5600s ive seen are the slower (350core/350mem), non flipchip designed cards.
Not worth the money, they are much to slow to use FSAA or any game that would demand that much memory.
I dont know if even a 5900 ultra o/c'd could use 256mb.

Agreed, I would recommend the original poster a 9700 nonpro if he wants to play DX9 games in the future at any suitable settings.
Although outdated, the Doom3 benches showed even the 5600 series doing well IMHO. Who knows how the radeons will perform on release.

I personally would spend the $200 for the 9700 (great price performance) if you cant wait for a 5600 ultra rev.2

even the old 5600 ultra is about GF4 4600 speeds, and that card is $135.. I'd go that route if you want as fast as the DX8 crowd and wouldnt mind DX9 features just in case.
