Just won a fx5900 ultra on ebay ($242.50!!!) are there any known problems
with this card???? i found out very quickly that this card runs very hot -
core temp at idle is 65c -ambient is 42c - i also bought a thermaltake xaser
3 case (seven fans!) to get air out of the case quickly. but it still runs
hot. not having any probs yet just want a few ideas. thanks for the assist

I have almost the same temps with a gainward 1100 5900 400/700 (before there
were xt models without temp monitor), being 36 idle on winter, but now I
find 42 ºC idle more often on hotter days. I'm running on a chieftech (TT
cases are very similar) case with 4 TT 3k rpm case fans, so I'd say your
values are about normal. Your shutdown temps are way above 100ºC (145 on
mine) so there's no reason to worry about.

As long as it doesn't crashes it shouldn't be a problem...

But yes, it runs hot... mmm, lets see... you could change the cooling! Yup,
mod the card, but then you seek a mod capable to remove heat faster as the
standard cooling.

Wich brand card do you have?

I think the auction page said BFG Tech but i am not sure as there are no
markings on the card and the fans just says NVIDIA ( lots of help there!!)
been looking for cooling fan mods but i am worried abourt the chip set h/s
as they are epoxied on. any one know how to safely remove them??? I think i
remember sometime long ago about freezing the h/s and removing them. but
dont know if that will work

Don't mod the cooling. Few will want to buy the card from you
when you next upgrade to a 6800, X800 etc.............

Bring up the 5900 temperature monitor on the desktop and leave it
open. Start your most graphics-challenging 3D game ( e.g: Far Cry
game/demo with most features enabled ). After 3 minutes in 3D mode,
exit the game using Alt-Tab and <<IMMEDIATELY>> observe
the temp measurement. If less than 73 degrees C, you are just
fine. BTW, overclocking the GPU will raise the temperature steeply. If

overclocking you MUST perform the above test. You may find
that you can overclock the GPU successfully at very high clock
rates, but that the temp will grossly exceed 73 degrees C. Reduce
the overclock until the temperature is acceptable. You will radically
shorten silicon life at long-term core temps greater than 80 degrees
C. The nVidia warning temperature is only for catastrophic
short-term problems like fan-failure.

Beware there is no temperature monitoring of the RAM chips.
However,the BFG 5900Ultra uses the nVidia reference design;
there is ample memory heat-sinking and mem overclock to
900MHz ( if they will go that high without game freeze-up )
should not thermally overstress the memory devices.

I wouldn't worry about it. The FX heat was/is a known factor when the card was
designed and built. As long as you have good airflow through the case you'll be
fine.
BTW,the 5800's ran even hotter.Dawg

yeah good price but it says "128MB DDR" which is always cheaper than the
256nb board. b4 i bid on this card i checked the prices and they ranged
from 375 to 599 bucks for oem to full retail box. (i got this one last
month)
these are the specs for my card:

GPU NVIDIA® GeForceT FX 5900 Ultra

Bus Type AGP
Memory 256MB DDR
Core Clock 450MHz
Memory Clock 850MHz (effective)
RAMDAC Dual 400MHz
API Support Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0, OpenGL for Microsoft® Windows®
Connectors VGA, DVI, VIVO
338 million vertices/sec.
27.2GB/sec. memory bandwidth

check the newegg card and you will see there is a difference in memory clock
speed also - 700mhz vs 850mhz
from doing a search of the net it seems that the ultra has been replaced by
the xt version that has only 128mb video ram
hmmmm, wonder what is going on?????

Sorry, this is the fake FX5900 called the XT version. No relation at
all to the BFG5900Ultra ( if that is what the OP really has). $240
is an excellent price for the genuine article. Examine the specs of
your...er... treasure a little more closely, then compare closely with
the 5900Ultra specs on www.bfgtech.com.
256 Meg vs 128 Meg
450Mhz GPU vs 390MHz (default)
850 MHz memory vs 700MHz memory (default)
.... just for starters

All the genuine 5900/5900Ultra built to the original nVidia specs
are now discontinued - replaced by the inferior FX versions - cheaper
to build, more profit margin for the board vendors. Easily sold to
idiots whose technical skills are limited to believing the blurb on
pretty retail packages - 95% of video card buyers @ Fry's.

>thats what im gettin in 2 weeks.. o well u already bought it, bummer fo u ;-)

Actually, bummer for YOU :- ( :-(
----------------------------
FYI:-

I bought a genuine BFG FX5900/128 (non-Ultra) from Newegg for $175 in
early March, including the full version of Call of Duty. Overclocks
very nicely to 475 GPU/875 Mem.

Please turn technical brain on and do a little research before your
next posting........

Actually, it's notta fake! - it's just an XT version of the FX5900 line. If
he would have bought an Ultra card he would have got Ultra clock speeds same
as u listed. This has absolutely nothing to do with BFG since there are
quite some manufacturers out there basically offering all the same cards.

YEP.. its not a "genuine" its just an ultra version, other than the XT
version, and i dont think the extra 100$ or so are worth a 10%
difference in clock speeds or so, and im not an overclocker and i dont
wanna mess with that cause i never tried it and am afraid the stuff
will die early or just fry when ill do it, even if they wont fry, they
will have a much shorter lifespan, so even if ure happy now, in 2
years when yours will die, mine will be perfect, and then ull just
waste another 300$ on a new gfx card and ill stick with the one ill
get in 2 weeks since its almost top of the line and itll hold for
doom3 etc... btw guys, whats VIVO ? the chaintech card i have seems to
have it, but it says optional, ill try emailing chaintech and see if
they can mail it for free to me...

10% faster GPU or Mem etc will cost you. This also apply to CPU. Couple
percentage faster speed difference will cost you, depending on how current
the item at that time.

Video In Video Out.
The card either have it or it does not. If you want ViVo, you will either
return the current card and get another that have ViVo. You can not simply
add a module to the card to become ViVo card.

What program ar u using to see the temperature on ur card.
I have Gainward Ultra/1100XT TV/DVI GS, GF FX 5900XT 128MB @ 487MHz/905MHz
and i've opened all hidden features with NVHardPage but i can't find temp.

right click on desktop select properties->settitings->advanced->geforce
fx5900 ultra (depends on installed card) you should see a box pop out on
side of menu, towards bottom you should see the temperature settings - you
do have the latest drivers, right??

What is VIVO? - basically it means you can capture a video and export it in
a different format. Here is more:

Many FX5900 XT ( or SE ) do not include any temperature monitoring.

Saves a few pennies in the manufacture of this cheap 'n cheesy
version of the 5900. Many have no heat-sinks on the memory
either.

nah its ok, S-video is enough, im not sure i even have a TV with
s-video so its useless, btw, for s-video, it only takes the VIDEO from
your comp to a TV right ? it doesnt take sound aswell, does it ? if it
doesnt, how to u use the TV to take the sound from the computer aswell
?
And also, here are 2 gfx cards, since a 5900xt is much better than a
5700, i decided to forget about the 5700 because those 30$ arent worth
it because theyre so much different and the 5900xt kicks the 5700's
ass. Anyways, i guess the XFX is better, is it worth the money ? and
im not gonna overclock or anything so forget about that (didnt do it,
and its also dangerous and i dont wanna mess with that ;-))
XFX:

Chaintech:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-145-072&depa=0

What do u think ? i hope i can get my dad to get the XFX one (if its
worth it.. tell me if it is), plus i also want a
headset(http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=36-151-019&depa=0,
that good enough ? im lookin for one with only a mic and no headphones
but since i cant find one of those ill get this, if u guys know of one
that i want plz let me know) and ut2k4 aswell.. so ill try to convince
my dad to get all of em...

what u guys say ? pretty long and many questions huh ? :p o well...
plz reply!

Watch out for the xfx products - i bought a 5700 w/256mb for the wifes
comp - the fan broke in one day i had to rma the damn thing back to xfx.

Yep, just a video out - no sound!

Naturally, the sound card can be used (line-out) to connect to the TV

A FX5700 card is fully sufficient for all current games on the market
provided your system is no bottleneck(fast CPU, HDs, plenty RAM). However,
score freaks think different and only for them there are cards like FX5900
Ultra and alike - I am not in this arena and, this way, dont care about the
whole FX5900 range!
