An R9 280/280X would be plenty (The newer models of the HD7900 series). I'm not sure about that power supply though especially with overclocking. I advice you to not overclock your CPU until you upgrade your power supply.
FPS or Fortron is one of the largest OEMs for PSUs. They make PSUs for many many other companies like Thermaltake, Antec, be quiet!, EVGA and many more.

The FPS Hexa 550W is a descent PSUs. Not good, just descent. Way better option than a Corsair CX or VS. The PSU is rated for 430W output from the 12V rail. I guess, due to the aging of your unit - it would be a bit under 400.

I would recommend you to get R9 285. It has performance between 280 and 280x but it consumes considerably less amount of power.

That is a such a blind assumption. Do you realize 280x is CGN 1.0 while 285 is CGN 1.2? There is much more than pure GBs of Vram going there. Your assumption is comparable to the initial ranting that 970 had only 128 bit on its VRam.

The 285 is a newer core, it will support most if not all of the upcoming features. While the 280x will not.

Features, what features? CGN 1.0 supports mantle and DX12 (not full) same as CGN 1.2.

2GB vram isnt enough, medium textures even today in quite a few games. Is that a good upgrade? Not really. 280X still packs a punch, 960gtx and 285 are not better choice.

The 285 is a newer generation. And it consumes 190 watts instead of 250. It will support all the upcoming features.

It is perfectly capable and wiser investment for 1080p. 2 GBs of Vram are more than enough for that resolution. If you wish to move to 2K, then you need a complete system change.

285 is barely 10% slower than 280x.

CGN 1.2 supports True Audio, the newer image and color compression techniques and much more. But if you want to go like a brute for pure spec numbers, be my guest in your own ignorance.

The Hexa is better than the Cooler Master PSU you want to buy.

Kitguru reviewed the 400 Hexa - and it was all good.

This reviewer put the 550 to mine with a 280x for non-stop weeks and it turned ok.

If you get a 285 - you can most likely keep your PSU for another year. And then upgrade CPU/Mobo/RAM and PSU altogether.

Doesn't the 280x support true audio? The 280x over the 285 is a better buy because even at 1080p 2gb IS NOT enough for some games. Watch dogs, bf4, Crysis 3 etc all pretty much max out 3gb cards now at 1080p. For a better smoother gaming experience the 280x is a better choice. I would get one from sapphire.
