I'm getting new gpu asus gtx 960 soon. currently i have fx-6100 which gets lots of bad reviews wherever i see. so definitely needing new cpu. esp one that isn't bulldozer.

Fx-6300 is so cheap compared to fx8320 also later needing more power consumption maybe even new motherboard since i heard it won't go well with my msi 970a-g46 board.

Looking at cpuboss comparison difference doesn't seem much. should i go for fx-6300 for gtx 960?

Are you willing to wait or are you in a hurry to upgrade?

if you go from your current chip to say fx 6300 you are looking at 5-10% performance increase with the same clocks in best case scenario, also since you have g46 board forget all about 8 core fx chips unless you want to see first hand what magic smoke looks like, that is literary the worst board i have ever seen for amd chips, also don't waste time using sites like cpu boss, both of those chips will perform almost the same in real life tasks, while the 8 core fx chips are complete waste of money unless you are planning on using it for rendering/video photo editing, thos 8 cores will give you zero benefit for gaming, you are far better of just overclocking you current cpu or waiting for something new to come out, though it seems it's gonna be next year at the soonest am3 is a dead platform, if you need more cpu power go with intel, or just get the gpu

Keep it for now. Wait for the new FX line to come out on the FM3 or AM4 socket. I've been thinking of upgrading my 5800K too but it would be a waste to upgrade to the current FX line of CPUs. The new FX APUs will come out in around 2016 which will be more efficient with power due to the 14nm fab process and will have R7 grade graphics which you can disable of course. The performance is not clear yet, but companies like AMD don't really release a product that has no performance improvement.

Don't go with an APU. I personally own one because I don't have the money to buy a better CPU and I wanted something to play league of legends with without buying a gpu. Right now I have a 5800K paired with a 260X. The Kaveri line of APUs are a lot more power efficient but they don't have a clear advantage over the FX line in terms single core performance, only having a small marginal improvement over Vishera. But if you really can't wait, I'd say go for the FX8320e because it will help you save power while still having 8 cores inside.
