Solution
Do you already have a AM3+ motherboard and DDR3 RAM? If so, then you could probably overclock the FX6300 to at least 4.1GHZ, possibly higher depending on the chip. This assumes you have a decent aftermarket cooler, because the stock one is not very good at all. Also, to achieve a decent overclock you will need a decent motherboard and good case cooling to keep the VRMs cool.

If you don't already have the motherboard, RAM and cooler, it would not be a good investment to build using 6+ year old technology (in my opinion). I have the FX6300 for my everyday computer and it works fine for my purpose (non-gaming rig), and I will keep it until something dies, then I will go to Ryzen (or whatever is the latest technology at the time).

Can't give any answer without knowing what your motherboard is. Detailed questions lead to detailed answers.

That particular motherboard is not the greatest (I have it also). I was able to get a stable overclock to 4.1Ghz, but I put it back to stock (3.5Ghz), because I don't use my rig for anything that demanding. So if you can find a FX6300 or 6350 for a cheap price, it would "tide you over" for a while until it is time for a modern setup.

In this case, I would not go above the 6300 - the 125W AM3+ CPUs can be a real pain-in-the-butt on budget motherboards.

If you don't plan on upgrading for a couple years and you don't want ryzen, I would actually suggest getting the fx 8350, it's still a cheap processor and it has a much better preformance than the 6300, what GPU are you using? You may have bottlneck issues if your GPU is to weak/strong
