Hello!

i am building my 2nd pc build and i was wondering if i should buy the fx-6300 or save up for the fx-8300. i am planing on overclocking i'm getting the CRYORIG M9a cooler so if you suggest a CPU can you please give expectations for overclocking. i have a gtx 950 scc from my previous build that i'm using. i haven't ordered any of the parts so no worries about that and the mobo i'm planing on using is GA-78LMT-USB3 gigabyte mobo

Thanks for any answers!!

Do not throw good money after bad.
GA-78LMT-USB3 may be ok for FX-6300, but not FX-8.

For $300, buy a $125 i3-6100, a H110 lga1151 motherboard, $50 and 8gb of ddr4 ram for $35
In time you can upgrade to even a i7-6700K.
Here is a review where the i3-6100 bests FX-8370.

You can save on the cooler too, the stock intel cooler will do the job.

At this point I would not recommend an AMD build. Neither would most of us here. It's a dead end platform AND it will be outperformed by an i3 usually depending on your needs.. Look at an i3-6100 and see if you can fit it in your budget.

Give us a budget and I'm sure someone can help.

I wouldn't say that motherboard is even good for a FX 6300. I bought that combo when the FX 6300 first came out, intending to use if for my ProTools (audio recording) rig. My Passmark scores were about half of what they should have been, so I ended up using a Phenom II 1045 for my ProTools rig, and kept the FX 6300 for my general purpose computer.

First off, if at all possible get an Intel build. Even the cheapest i3 can usually beat any AMD FX in gaming. Secondly, I own a GA-78LMT-USB3. I've had both an FX-8300 and FX-8320E in it with a run-of-the-mill Xigmatek 120mm tower cooler in a cheap Fractal Design case. Both CPUs could overclock to 4.3 GHZ with NO throttling or overheating of the NB or VRMs. Its rated for 125W processors so a 95W with a moderate overclock will be fine (like 4.0 Ghz). Still, there are better choices for overclocking in the 970 chipset.

Again, if at all possible get an i3-6100 if you're on a really tight budget.

The AMD advice is not to buy it. It isn't a smart buy at the current time. Especially when skylake I3's are performing similar to AMD's high end 8350/8370. It takes a seriously overclocked 8350/8370 to barely get ahead of the Skylake I3's. Not to mention the AM3+ socket is a total dead end. The 1151 socket has plently of life left ahead of it.

Hello!
I was really hopeing for more core count even if 2 core share a fpu on the amd rig and the reason that i ended up asking is because of a video that compares the fx-8300 and the i3-6100 at the same clock
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLkaNWo0EV0
thats why i wanted amd but anyways if you say i should get a intel rig can you please give me a guide to start with. i would like to play bf 1 or bf 4 if you want to know that games i'm aiming to play so yea

Thanks for the answers!!

What is your exact Budget and what parts do you have so far so i don't add unnecessary parts to the list?

The i3 is a 4-thread CPU, and its cores are close to twice as fast as the FX's. Honestly, it trades blows with an FX-83xx in most cases, being outperformed a bit in high-budget titles like Battlefield but blowing the FX away in more poorly threaded titles like Arma, Guild Wars and DayZ. In general Windows performance, the i3 will feel a lot snappier. Nevermind that it draws 1/3 the power, doesn't need an aftermarket cooler, can be used on a cheaper motherboard and with a smaller power supply, has a chipset with more modern connectivity and is on a socket that will receive at least 2 more generations of CPUs over the next few years.

My AMD advice: eBay or Craigslist the motherboard if you already own it.

AMD CPU are affordable

No Fair comparison based on price - AMD FX/APU vs Intel i3/5/7

hello!

I was looking at a Pentium g3258. is that a good choice too because its unlocked andit has simular performance to the fx 6300 but im not shore if its any good comparing 6 cores to two and if it will be able to pull 1080p or at lest 720p and 60-30 fps withought shuddering vs the fx 6300 or 8300 and multitasking like skype or music when i'm playing games if that will have a big impact anyways Thanks for the answers!!

No the pentium is not good, its only dual core and has no hyperthreading and modern games really need 4 threads. The i3 6100 is dual core but has hyperthreading so it has 4 threads.

I'm with all the others, get an i3 6100 minimum. It's on a level with FX8xxx for gaming and unlike FX series there would be great upgrade opportunities later for a Skylake or Kabylake i5/i7.
