Fx 8320 forcing itself at 2.9 ghz

i was overclocking it on amd overdrive to 4.5 ghz and it wont acheive its target speed and stays stuck at 2.9 ghz

if you remove the OC will it run at its normal speed? are you sure your mobo can handle the OC, or the cpu alone. a lot of times motherboards if not designed for the high load will downclock the cpu so no damage is done immediately at least.

Did you restart the PC after raising the clock speed? You really shouldn't just jack it up to 4.5 GHz either. Go up slowly and test after each adjustment.

Have you tried overclocking from the BIOS instead? Doing it in Windows is not recommended.

Yes I tried everything you stated and I slowly went up to 4.5 and my bios overclck will for some odd reason not work at all no matter how high I bring up the voltage I can't even get 3.7 GHz idk if I got a bad processor, my mother board is crapping out or if my windows install is bad

No the frequency wont go back and i have a as rock 970 extreme 3

Go into your power profile settings in the control panel. In the advanced settings, look for processor power management. Make sure the maximum processor state is set to 100%.

What are you changing besides the voltage? Multiplier? BCLK? Try setting everything back to stock and just raise the multiplier. Check the CnQ (cool n quiet) setting in BIOS. It is like Speedstep with Intel CPUs. It will downclock the CPU when idle and run it at max when needed. If you turn it off, your CPU will stay at the highest speed all the time.

Haha i tried that too idk whats wrong with it i got it to run back at stock now but if i try overclocking it i notice once it is under heavy load for a while it shoots down to 1.3 ghz but other than the throttling it runs stable at 4.0ghz @ 1.2625 v

What are you thermal readings? What heatsink do you have? It might be throttling itself.

Secondly, AMD Overdrive isn't always the best way to overclock. If you can achieve a stable overclock with that, it would probably to transfer it over to the BIOS.

Thermal readings are below 45 degrees Celsius on load some times jumps to 50 but only for a second or to and i have an antec kuler for my cpu cooler. I managed to get it to 4.4 ghz in the bios but whenever i play crysis 3 for more than ten minutes its still bumping the voltage and clock down

If you haven't done so, I would try a CMOS reset either by jumper or removing the battery from the motherboard for a couple minutes without any power hooked up the PC.

So i tried it and its still doing it i have no idea what the hell is going on with it is it possible my powersupply is the cause

What are the other parts of your system? PSU, motherboard, GPU, RAM, case fans, CPU cooler, hard drives, optical drives, USB devices, PCI devices, eSATA, etc, etc. Everything that is being powered by the PSU basically. If the PSU does not have enough power due to too many devices drawing too much power, it is possible that it is the cause.

Check page 37 of the ASRock 970 Extreme3 user manual: http://download.asrock.com/manual/970%20Extreme3.pdf on the bottom, section 2.16 Untied Overclocking Technology reads:

This motherboard supports Untied Overclocking Technology, which means during
overclocking, FSB enjoys better margin due to fixed PCI / PCIE buses. Before you
enable Untied Overclocking function, please enter “Overclock Mode” option of UEFI
setup to set the selection from [Auto] to [Manual]. Therefore, CPU FSB is untied
during overclocking, but PCI / PCIE buses are in the fixed mode so that FSB can
operate under a more stable overclocking environment.

You said you noticed that your hyper transport is not at the correct speed. This could be because it is "tied" to the CPU clock. Make sure this setting is on manual before you set the CPU overclock.

I think it might have solved the issue but im not sure. it was running prime 95 at my overclocked clocks for a lot longer than when i had that setting on auto but it still throttled but im thinking that this is due to tempature rather than the issue i was having before because now its throttling down when my temps hit 59 C but i still dont know for shure

This actually didn't do anything i have no idea why that test was running better than the others
