Hello there,

I just bought a FX 8320 + Asus M5A97 R2.0, i used to have a Phenom II X4 925.

Im using a Coolermaster T2 Blizzard cooler, with arctic silver 5 Thermal paste and still my FX is running 38~40ºC idle, if i use prime95 in less than 1 minute it goes to 66ºC+ !!!

With the same cooler and thermal paste my Phenom would never go beyond 45ºC in full load.

What can it be ? is it normal ?

Solution
I think your temps are fine. I've never heard anything from AMD on how to accurately calculate the actual temps vs the reported C or F. Apparently the numbers their chips report aren't actual temp. I may be wrong but I believe you are correct, the package temp is the actual core temp.

I love that your describing 86F as cold. I live in Manhattan and would really appreciate some days in the 80's.
you probably don't have the heat sink mounted properly. try tightening the mounting screws also toms did an article on thermal paste and mounting heat sinks differently. you might want to take a look at that. other wise make sure that there is no dust or debris in the heat sink its self.

You're not too far out of the norm. With my 8320 & a 212 EVO my temps were nearly the same. Switched to a h100i and it dropped my temps quite a bit and let me achieve a much better stable overclock. Hot chip already, you may have one that runs a bit warmer, might want to consider a better cooler but you'd probably be fine with the T2 if you don't plan on OC'ing or doing a tun of 100% load benching.

there ain't no screws in this cooler for socket AM3+ and i did the middle pea application with little points in the corners. The mounting seems solid ! I redid it 2 times already to be sure.

@bjaminnyc

its running hot then, i didn't know it was so hot. And thats because the weather here is cold today, usually its 30+ºC (i'm from Brazil).

I'm using the Asus software and HWmonitor as well, they are reading the same. Im looking at CPU on the asus software and CPU bellow motherboard > temperatures on the HW Monitor.

on the HW monitor the CPU package is lower, 18~30ºC, it seems to be the core temperature. am i right ?

I'm planning to OC after i upgrade my GPU. Right now there is no need to OC. I have a GTX 560 ti, stock clock is good enough to handle it.

today its "cold" 20ºC, the normal temperature around here is 25~35ºC, in the summer we can get up to 40~42ºC !!! That's why i'm worried about the cpu temps. Today is a "cold" day and yet the cpu is 40ºC in low load.

Well, at least it is the normal temps for this CPU. I might get a water cooler later.

Do you recommend any ? i'd go with something cheaper than the H100i.
