So when i open up the performance tab of task manager it tells me that my 8 core processor is running on 4 cores and 8 logical processors is the this accurate or is there something ive done wrong? it also says that virtualisation is disabled, is this important? and can someone explain what hyper v support is. thank you in advance

Solution
this is correct

amd "8-core" processors are not typical.

they stick 2 cores in each module. traditionally, each core has it's own L2 cache. these amd cpus have each L2 cache sharing 2 cores.

it's accurate, don't worry about it.
ok thank you that explains alot but i just find it weird that me and a friend have the same amount of ram and the same cpu but he has a mid range intel i5 and i have the 8 core because i do alot of video editing and rendering so i need the power and his cpu runs at 0.5ghz slower than mine yet he gets around 20-40 fps more than me on most games. is this just because not many games are designed for 8 core processors is it just that 8 core cpu's are to powerful and programs and games cant assign things to all the cores?

ya pretty much. the ipc, ie, the amount of work done by a core per processing cycle is much higher on the intel offering and games dont take advantage of 8 cores so the intel cpu tends to beat out the amd in gaming.

basically anything that only uses up to 4 cores will run better on the intel. production programs tend to use as many cores as you can throw at them though, so that is where amd catches up and often passes what intel offers. especially the i5s, which do not have hyperthreading.

so was i right with going with the 8 core for the video editing and rendering or should i swap out to a intel cpu? im currently saving up to build my dream pc so im just trying to get all the information i think im going to need and find out whats best for what i want to do
