I have been away from desktop gaming for a good 2 years after giving my main desktop to my brother and my older one as a dedicated HTPC and File/VPN server. For now I am gaming on my laptop (i7 3632qm, GT 650M Overclocked, 16GB 1600MHz, 120GB SSD + 1TB HDD.) The deal is I am planning on building a gaming rig this summer but I am on a tight budget. I used approximately a few hundred over $1000 on PS4/Camera Lens/Gifts the last few months. As a part time worker and a college student I don't have loads of money.
So here are my choices. A10-7850K, FX-8320, or a locked i5 processor that is either Sandybridge or Ivy Bridge. What are your choices?
The A10 is great w/o a dedicated video card but it's to weak of a CPU when you purchase a high-end video card. FX-8320 is the budget CPU if you want a (4 module) 8-Core CPU. The reason I stated a locked i5 is because in most cases they can probably out perform FX CPUs and I can buy one used around the price of a FX-8350 or 8320. 2nd and 3rd gen reasons are so I can bin overclock the i5.
I've read and watched enough and benchmarks, blogs, forums to know the i7 and i5 somewhat dominates the competition. Is a i5 good enough to go through the hassle to buy a used/locked version instead of a FX CPU?
What if a 7870 or R9 270X is the highest card I plan to buy and maybe crossfire two later. I don't see the point in getting a R9 290 (x) or a GTX 780 until another price drop/sale or if I sell my PS4 (making me console less and without the ability to play exclusive games)
I really want this build to last a long time, a good five years. With 8-Cores in the PS4 and Xbox One I feel developers will be more likely to nake games utilize more. That and this AMD mantle and HSA stuff is why I have not jumped on the Intel bandwagon.
I just want to see people's opinions once again. I love buolding and tinkering with computers but the most fun comes from getting components at dirt cheap prices and ending up with a good computer. My first custom computer was built on a $5 Athlon 64 X2 6400+ that I unbent pins on. Then a Phenom II X6 1055T when they released.
Depending on if I can purchase this A10-6790K for under $30 and it works I may end up going with an AMD APU build. Hopefully all of AMD's new features get widely spread and used soon.
