I just bought and installed a FX9590. Initially it said the CPU wasn't supported, I reseated the CPU and got it the system to work. The problem is now that the CPU clocks in at 4.0 instead of 4.7. I did some reading and people said installing BIOS FCH will help, I don't see a BIOS update called FCH on the manufacturer's website. What should be my next step?
My motherboard does support the FX9590. It is a M5A78L-M LX PLUS

Solution

Unfortunately the M5A78L-M LX PLUS does not fully support the FX-9590 as the Max TDP for that MB is 125W and the FX-9590 requires 220TDP.
For full support you would need the Crosshair V Formula Z

Where is it listed as supported?

This is a completely inappropriate system for an FX-9590. Ignoring for a minute that the CPU is probably the worst consumer CPU released since the late-era Pentium 4s, a hot, power-hungry, inefficient mess, this CPU has a 220W TDP and you're trying to run it on a low-end motherboard.

To run a 9590 at it's stock speeds properly and safely, you really need a beefy 990FX motherboard, high-end cooling, and an excellent power supply. Given that the CPU's performance is nothing worth all that investment unless you already have those things, your best bet is to either return the 9590 and get an FX-8320/8350 or upgrade to a modern platform.

Ok I found my info off Game-Debate.com. My bad and lesson learned, I've already paid for the water cooler as well, I can get a supported board for around 130 dollars. I don't mind as I'm a fan of AMD anyways and the chip will run the games I want it to run.

The system is no longer booting, is there a way I can at least get it to boot back at the 4 ghz or will this risk damaging the CPU? I do have 2 year warranty on it.

I wouldn't risk it Hurryheathen. Wait till you upgrade your MB and which one btw.?
Don't buy a second hand board and don't buy a cheap PSU. The FX-9590 is a beast of a processor but is very capable of good multitasking and game play if you put together the right components. A good knowledge and familiarity with your Bios is essential for OCing up to 5.0GHz

The board would be a
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 R5
I am planning to up the PSU as well as its only a 550 W

So even with the water cooler you think I should just put back in my old processor?

Yes the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 R5 will fully support the FX-9590.
Also get an 850W gold certified PSU from EVGA or Seasonic.
You will need an AIO H110 or equivalent Water Cooler.
Yes put your old CPU back in for the time being.
Before you assemble your new system into the tower case, Benchtest first.
Make sure you apply your TIM properly, don't over apply and use the rice method.

When your ready to go and your stable at 4.7GHz, send me a private email here and I'll help you to OC that little beast.

Thanks will do.

I bought an H60 because it is what they recommended at Memory Express

Well Memory Express are wrong in that recommendation and don't know what they are talking about. Return the H60 as it only has a single 120mm fan and radiator. You will need a H110 twin 140mm fans and 280mm radiator to keep up.

The FX-9590 gets hot fast especially at 5GHz turbo and this has been the most common mistake and source of disclaim by many unable to achieve the CPUs potential. Do it right the first time and you won't be disappointed.

So I put back in my 4100 for now. I left the cooler with it and will upgrade to the H110 as you suggested. I'm now hoping to sell my old machine slightly overclocked for around 250 dollars. I figured 70 for the cooler plus 180 for everything else and I think I can sell it reasonable quick. At least with the 250. I can get started with a new motherboard!
