so i want to get an upgrade for my pc and i have the choice of the fx 8350 with a 990fx motherboard and a wraith cooler, i already i ddr3 in my current set up, or an i3 with an asrock b150 pro4, id have to buy ddr4, now i like to host a lot of servers for my friends, so thats why id go for the fx since it has a better multi-tasking capability's, but in terms of just gaming performance id go for the i3 6100, so i was mainly wondering if i was to get the i3 would i be struggling to run the servers or not, and would the fx chip be lagging behind the i3 in terms of performance to a noticeable amount? any help? i more tha understand that there is the hole upgrade path argument, but i dont intend on spending anymore money on the pc apart from a better gpu, thanks for reading.

Solution
This depends on a lot of thing and can't be answered easily, multiple servers if they need a lot of resources will indeed run better on the fx,if they don't need a lot of resources it depends.
In game performance is also greatly dependent on the GPU if you use a GPU that is weaker then either CPU you won't see much difference anyway,if you have a strong enough GPU then it will also greatly depend on the game itself.

If you can, wait for zen and kaby before you make a choice since it's not that long anymore.

thanks for the reply, i know what your saying about both zen and kabylake, but my issue with them is that for a high core count cpu it will cost way out of my price range, i suppose if i wait for zen and i see if it would still be worth getting a 8350 at that time, or just getting a zen cpu, thanks for the help

Kabylake is rumored to have pentiums with Hyperthreading, basically current gen i3-6100 at under $100

Also ZEN prices might be lower then expected, everybody speculates on prices based on the AMD presentation,if performance is lower prices will also be lower.
