Been thinking about getting a VIVO g/c for some video capture and games for my spare kit currently with a 2.6GHz P4, 512MB PC-3200 but using an Asus V7100 (old Geforce MX).
Spare bits never die they just get put to pasture.

I've narrowed the choice down to the FX5600 non-ultra due to budget and usage and recently saw the Leadtek A310TD FX5600 with 256MB for about £130 inc VAT. Now as i've read that 256MB will make ah heck all difference for game play compared to 128MB for most common resolutions, xAA etc. But what about video capture? Would the 256MB of memory make for a better capture capability?

Cheers if anyone can help.

The memory on your video card is not used when capturing video.

256 megs are still a marketing feature at this point. If you can find a cheaper card with 128, and VIVO, go for it.

Cheers Cleeve for the speedy reply.

Didn't know that about the g/c memory not used for capture. Learn something new every day.

Just like what cleeve said, 256MB is marketing only today (in the future, it might be useful).

reply to your question : NO

capturing video has noting to do with ram. well maybe speed.

but the capture has to be sent over the AGP bus to the main system ram to be saved on the HDD. teh only benifit to having extra v-ram when screen capturing would be speed.. but over 32megs wont matter for that anyways ebcause screen shots dont use NEARLY that much anyways. maybe 6 megs at MOST for bitmaps. ive never seen a 6meg bitmap which is the largest image file (uncompressed)

256megs of vram is useless. its another grab at your wallet. dont let them steal your money

On a 5600 or 9600, 256mb would never be useful, because to use settings that would warrant a difference would make any game unplayable. I'm talking 1600x1200 6xAA/16xAF or 8xAA/8xAF, and only on the most complicated games. On those midrange cards, you'd be watching a slideshow. On a 9800 Pro or FX5900Ultra, there'd be a noticeable/playable difference.

Before you finalize your FX purchase for video-capture, you may want to read THIS from the Inquirer.

Soundslike there are some minor issue with capture on the nV lines (may be just mobiles but not specific enough since it mentions the 'video card' being potentially troublesome).
A nice bit of incentive also seems to be the CAPTURE over AGP support for Pinnacle. That's pretty sweet, putting the chores on the biggest pipe (8X not being fully used by a long shot).
Just thought it was worth a heads-up.
