FX6300 prime95 shutdown

Hey guys, I was running my fx6300 not overclocked with stock cooler in prime95. The test lasted 1 minute or so and then my pc shut itself down. The CPU temp got to about 90 degrees!! Why did this happen do you think? I can't seem to figure out why my cpu got such a high temperature not overclocked with the stock cooler. Could it be the thermal paste or cooler not positioned properly?

I'm going with not positioned properly its easy to do on those things... for all the hate on the intel cooler at least it has to line up.. I would make sure that it is centered on the processor.

Yes you'll be fine

Well... no. You really should change the paste, unless you just installed it a day or two ago. After around 72 hours most paste sets and won't reset well when you move things around.

This is true I did assume he just built the PC I Figure if it got hot enough to turn off in prime it would probably freak out under reasonable load as well, but it may well have been weeks.

I've had this thermal paste for a few months now, so i'll replace it. Thanks for the advice. Also when running prime95 with a non overclocked cpu with it's stock cooler, should it overheat like that? Is it meant to be able to handle it, doesn't the prime95 just push it to it's max?

It shouldn't overheat at stock.

Completely missed the most important question. How much did you overclock it? You can't go very far with stock cooling.

It wasn't Oced at all...

With the stock cooler you should have no issues assuming the case is properly ventilated, and the HS is properly installed, additionally make sure the HS isn't covered in dust.

Yeah the HS isn't covered in dust and the case it ventilated good. I think it was just my bad positioning of the fan and HS. Thanks for all the help guys
