I have recently gotten a deal for around 300usd, to swap to i7-4790(non-K) + Gigabyte Z97M-D3H + 2x4GB HyperXFury Ram.

Which I assume this will be a great upgrade to my FX-6300 CPU.
Main use for my pc is for gaming, as I played mostly MMO,BDO,PUBG,BF1.
I don’t play single players games that much, I see a lot of FPS drop especially entering crowded area in multiplayer games, as this take stress on CPU usage.

I have a 60hz monitor at 1080p.

Question is, is the upgrade still can worth it judging from ddr3 platform.
Would like to keep the rig running for another 3-4years.

My other option is to setup a new rig, but with the current price on ddr4 ram is vey high due to shortage.
I would like to keep my upgrade cost to minimal. 400usd would be max I would want to spend.

Current rig :
-FX-6300 OC’ed @ 4.00ghz
-CoolerMaster 212 Evo Red
-MSI 970a-G43
-MSI GTX-970
-2x4GB HyperXFury Ram
-random 650w 80+ bronze PSU
-Transcend s220 240GB SSD
-WD 1TB HDD
-60hz AOC 23” monitor
-32” toshiba TV

The b350 boards for Ryzen do ok for overclocking. They are very close to the x370 ones. Naturally it varies from board to board. Read specific reviews.

The i3-8100 vs the 4790. The i3 will match the performance of the older I7. They have the same base clock speed, but the i3 is a much...
The 4790 would be a huge improvement, and is still quite capable of gaming/heavy workloads when compared to 6th/7th gen Intel processors as well. You'd get more performance for your $ than building a new platform since DDR4 prices are so high right now.

Might use the extra $ to invest in a better PSU as well.

It would be a great system upgrade, but you are being overcharged and A LOT.

I am assuming the items you are buying are used? If so I would not pay $150 for it, let alone twice that. Look on craigslist, ebay etc for a more reasonably priced deal. By being patient on CL, I bought two i7-3770 systems for $150 each (complete). I've seen plenty of systems with your CPU, not just parts, for around the same price. I'm located near Seattle, but I can't imagine pricing being too hugely different in other parts of the country.

An AMD system with around the same performance level (maybe slightly faster), but without being used and in who knows what condition.
PCPartPicker part list
CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1500X 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($167.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI - B350M PRO-VD PLUS Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($59.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Crucial - Ballistix Sport LT 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory ($159.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $387.87

Here is a quad core Intel system, which would definitely be slightly faster.
PCPartPicker part list
CPU: Intel - Core i3-8100 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor ($127.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte - Z370 HD3 (rev. 1.0) ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($108.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Crucial - Ballistix Sport LT 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory ($159.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $396.87

Both the new systems are ~100 more. But they are going to be trouble free current systems. You can easily upgrade those systems going forward, not just re-investing in old tech. The discount from modern+new to not-modern+used has to be more than 25% particularly when the used will not have a warranty.

Worth is something only YOU can determine.
I think that is a good move.
FX-6300 has 6 threads and a passmark rating of 6370 with a single thread rating of 1407.
I7-4790 has 8 threads and a passmark rating of 9999 and a single thread rating of 2265.

Multiplayer games benefit from many threads.
Most other games will benefit most from the single thread boost.

Per bjornl post, I looked on ebay for used I7-4790 processors with a filter for completed auctions.
$200 or so seems to be the area where they are actually sold.

It also occurs to me that you might be able to get 16gb by adding in the extra fam from your old rig. You may need to add more ram voltage in the bios to get it to work. Nothing lost if it does not work.

I3-8100 is comparable to a old gen i7? I’m not sure how does 1500x fair against the 4790, isit faster in terms of gaming? The cheapest ddr4 ram 16gb in my area is about 200usd, which is a lot of money to spend on ram sticks.
I made a mistake on getting the current msi board with my fx chip, which is not a good mobo for oc.
How does the b350 board fair in terms of oc? Do I have better choice on mobo taking that into consideration ?

Thanks !

I3-8100 is a lga1151 processor. 4 threads, passmark 8197/2049. It needs ddr4 ram.

ryzen 5 1500X is a 4 core/8 thread processor, similar to the I7-4790. It has a passmark rating of 10438/2265. It also needs ddr4 ram.
With ryzen, all models top out on overclocking at about a 3.9 rate.
The more expensive the chip, the more threads you get and a better bin on overclocking.

What is your budget?
How much ram do you need?

I’m thinking the cheaper the better, that is why 4790 bundle are in mind , that would bring me to 16gb ddr3 ram too.

If the price of ddr4 wasn’t that high, I would take the new generation cpu.

Prefer to have 16gb, and max budget is 400usd, cheaper the better ofcourse.

A I3-7300 kaby lake processor@4.0 passmark 6454/2326,
B250 motherboard, and 2 x 8gb of DDR4 ram. will cost about $360.
If you can sell your old parts, you can go up from there.

If your games are single thread limited, that is a nice upgrade.
If your games need more threads, not so much.
How to tell?
Do an experiment removing one or two threads.
You can do this in the windows msconfig boot advanced options option.
You will need to reboot for the change to take effect. Set the number of threads to less than you have.
This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many threads.
If you see little difference, your game does not need all the threads you have.

The i3-8100 vs the 4790. The i3 will match the performance of the older I7. They have the same base clock speed, but the i3 is a much newer architecture and has better instructions per clock cycle. The 4790 on the other had has hyper-threading which will give it the edge when doing multi-threaded tasks.

However the reason to choose a newer platform over the older one is not simply about performance. It is about the next upgrade. When you decide to upgrade the 4790 system, you have to throw out all the money you just spent (all you will recoup will be the current used price for what will be very old gear). While if you go with a coffeelake or ryzen, then to get a faster CPU is a fairly simple and less expensive deal. It is a platform that will last you longer than the haswell system.

I ended up starting a new build from scratch.

-Ryzen5 1600 : 240$
-Asus Prime B350-plus : 120$
-GSkill Trident RGB 8GBx2,3000mhz : 210$

Thanks for all your suggestion , cheers !
