Ok, I tried Ocing my new 8120 at first I tried using the TurboEvo from AIsuiteII auto tune I set it to fast and only got to 3.3ghz I tried it on extreme and as it increases it always becomes unstable and shuts down after 3.5ghz I find this odd considering i hear people reaching 4.5-5ghz forexample: http://www.overclock.net/amd-general/1142239-amd-fx-8120-overclocking-benchmarking.html
I tried manually and it also becomes unstable. Can anyone make a video if they have the same cpu and mobo of how they OCed it,or pics.

I also want to manually set my ram timings and or push it to 1866mhz from its stock 1600mhz and I don't know how.

My Mobo is a Asus CrossHair V Formula RAM: G SKILL 1600mhz Cas9 9-9-9-24,Advice is very much needed.

I overclocked my FX-8120 by happenstance while trying to tweek in my memory. I have a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 mobo and 16 gigs of Gskill Ripjaw F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL x 4.
With standard voltage I am hitting 220 MHz x 16 =3.52 GHz. When I tried tweeking to 223 I got BSDs within one minute of boot up. My Passmark is 7987. I didn't know if this is good or not, as I seem to be far away from the FX-8150 which I suspect was either OC'ed or it was rigged. My memory should be good beyond 1800Mhz. I reason that if I have to raise the voltage, the CPU will get too hot and I'll have to go with something more exotic rather than the stock cooler that came with the device. Hell, if I really wanted something faster for a little more money, I would have gone to the dark side and got an Intel i7.

Update-
I flashed my bios with the latest. Of course I had to reset my setting, so they were a bit different from my last attempt. ratcheting my FSB to 220 now renders BSDs during boot. I don't know if it this is memory or CPU related. I lowered the the FSB to 217 and tweeked my core voltage up on my memory and CPU. My CPU passmark is slightly lower ~7900, but my memory speed is kicking some serious butt, Passmark is now 2210, was 1950.

first you will need a high quality 700w psu if you want to get over 4ghz, those things are power pigs. and dont use auto overclock, its nowhere near as good as manual overclock. you will have a lack of answers as there arent enough people with these CPU's to give you a good run-down or overclocking guide, but read the forum rules and dont "BUMP" or your thread will get closed. You will have to just do things the old fashion way and overclock in baby steps, tweaking settings here and there to see what happens. It confuses me why anyone would actually buy this CPU, but each to their own i guess....

Yea, I stopped using the auto OCer thing and just do it manually.
I can get 4.1Ghz on stock voltage just by raising multiplier.I got my RAM to 1800Mhz as opposed to the stock 1600mhz but in the end i stayed with 1600mhz.

Rickey, you won't get anything out of the CPU with the stock cooler I suggest either a Noctua DH14 (Aircooling) or a Antec H20 920(Watercooling).

To iam2thecrowe:850W PSU btw.

I'd say go for it,anything would be better than the stock cooler, my Noctua DH-14 keeps my 8120 at 3.8GHZ 29C-33C Idle 37C-45C Load.On Prime95 I usually get 49C-52C 55C at most after a few hours.Here is a review for a H70:http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/corsair_h70/4.htm although 56$ is a good deal for 20$ more you could get a DH-14 or a H80 if you get a good deal.If your on a budget though I suggest a Cooler Master Hyper212EVO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099
35$for good performance Stick another fan on it and I believe it may be cooler than a H60 not 100%sure.

Also try raising the multiplier not just the bus speeds I also get BSOD after increasing bus past 223, with just raising multiplier you should be able to get a stable 4.0-4.2 on all stock voltages with just a mild temperature increase at 4.2GHZ I got 34C instead of the usual 32C at stock.

From the I set my FX-8120 on 3.6GHZ on air and with my MSI 970A-G45 Board, with 100% load on all cores my max temp is 36 degrees, and from what I hear, even the 50's are safe. I must say I atleast am impressed with this processor. Also I'm using the stock Air cooler and a 500W PC Power and Cooling PSU all with a GTX460, never had it suck too much power.

Here is my latest update on my FX-8120 overclocking and cooling status. I purchased an Antec Kuhler 620, which had better specs than the Corsair H60. As mentioned before I bumped my FSB up to 217, but I dropped it down to an even 215 Mhz just for margin. I booted into Windows 7 and was running Battlefield Bad Company with all the eye candy on max. No sooner that I got into the game play the over temp alarm tripped. I have this set at 60 c. Likewise, I had an overtemp on my fan controller which monitors the CPU temp, but this was set at a lower temp (50c). Since it is next to impossible to apply the thermistor close to the CPU, there will always be a large temperature delta.

Before I continue, I am using a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 (rev. 1.1), it has a voltage regulator on a heat sink. This puppy was fricken red hot!!!! Sheesh, I can't believe these imbeciles didn't make the heat sink larger or include a fan, but I digress.

Back to the Antec water cooler. This device has a radiator with a 120mm fan. Both components are assembled as a sandwich to the case in a chassis, fan and radiator sequence. The fan pulls air through the radiator and out the back of the case. Not leaving good enough alone. I am going to try placing a second fan as a pusher. This will be for two reasons:
1) hot air across a DC brushless fan is asking for failure.
2) a second fan will produce more pressure (NO, IT WON'T PRODUCE MORE CFM AT NO LOAD) which is what is needed for a radiator.

I will also place a second fan into the case to cool the regulator HS. This whole project has been a heavy bummer so far. Hopefully th is will make things good.

Rickey

I have no experience with the new FX chips but 60C from only a minute of game play sounds like a heat sink problem. I would try to reseat the heatsink. I assume you used thermal paste.

What hits me about this is that a 7.5% OC should not get that high that fast with the cooling you have. what are your idle/room temps?

I confess that I know little about overclocking. I have since read a few articles and have disvcovered that pushing the frontside bus is doing it the hard way. I have since reduced by FSB down to 207 MHz, but bumped up my multiplier 16.5. This gives me a speed of 3.415 Ghz. So far my overtemp has not tripped. BTW- the heatsink or water cooler is secured and is isothermal to the CPU. The radiator gets dang hot along with the northbridge. I think that reducing the FSB takes a lot of load off the machine. Last, all voltages are at stock levels. My CPU overall Passmark is 7717, and my memory pegs out at 2118.

This need for overclocking came about when I purchased all the components for my system. In haste I purchased some 1866 Mhz memory without making sure it would be compatible with my MoBo. ALthough my MoBo supports this type of memory, it didn't like the brand an would always default to 1333. The memory worked at 1600, but it should be running much faster than that. So that is when I started screwing with the FSB. In all I'm satisfied, but if I had less scrupples I would have spent $100 more and purchased a Core 7.

I have the UD5 version of that board. What version of bios do you have? I think in general F3 was the best for OCing, then f5-6 where decent, F4 was not very stable for me. When my MoBo was not posting past a 210 fsb I found that bumping my FSB voltage (MoBo North bridge voltage) from 1.1 to 1.6 or so helped (ud5 has a decent little Heatsink on the north bridge). does you case have good air flow?

Another thought can you set the ram to 1866 in bios with out bumping the FSB? I cant as athlon IIs dont suport that speed (nor are the unlocked) but it have an option in the ram settings to set the ram multiplier to 933.

When my fsb wouldnt pass 210 I found the reason was my ram, I changed out the 2 no so great sticks and now im back up to 240fsb. ram is set to 533 so that they end up at 1600 (thier rated speed).

Also have you taken a look at your voltages in bios and in windows? I have to set bios ram voltage to 1.75 so that my sticks get 1.65 in windows (the voltage required to set them at 1600mhz.)

Just some thoughts and Ideas that might help.

My 8120 is PRIME95 stable at 4.2GHz - 1.37V. (200MHZ x 21)

MOBO: Sabertooth 990FX BIOS: 0705
PSU: Corsair TX750W
RAM: 8GB PATRIOT VIPER EXTREME 1866MHz (at stock)
COOLING: Scythe Mugen 3 + Zalman STG-1

CoreTemp reads, max 45 celsius on each core while stressing with prime95.
I think I could easily go higher with some higher voltages :)

I have had my 8120 as high as 4.5 @1.45v, and didn't have any issues except under continous load - I can't run sustained any faster than about 4.0 and 1.35V... Monitoring the performance it will stablize at 4.5 under load with a CPU temp of about 58C and a Core Temp of about 44C (liquid cooled) but after about 30 seconds the multiplier will change itself to 7 for about 5 seconds and then it will go back to the desired multiplier for about 20 seconds, then keep switching back and fourth. I am pretty sure that it is not temperature related - any ides what could be causing this? Power supply? I have a 750W which I thought would be adquate...

AMD 8120
AsRock 970 Extreme 3

Thanks for any help!

I am getting the same thing with an FX-4100 on a GB 990FXA-UD3. I have it a 4.1GHz (200x20.5) and -0.75v. It tops out at 45C (stock HSF) but the voltages and multi will swing all over the place in CPU-z. It can usually stay at x20 but will occasionally drop to x16 for 10 or so seconds. Pushing it beyond this just makes it worse.

Interestingly enough Gigabyte's EasyTune doen't report any fluctuations.

Sounds exactly the same, if I stay at 4.0 (200x20) and standard voltage it's not too bad, maybe a only one every few minutes, the higher you go the worse it gets. I've changed every setting in the bios I can think of with no improvement and lots of different cooling ideas - just kinda out of ideas here and would love to find the solution.

I think my issue is related to the TIMPN2 sensor reading at ~50C+. It got at lot worse once I added a GTX 560ti.

Now I just need to figure out where that sensor is and how to get the heat off of it.

Well this is strange all of you are experiencing troubles past 220 buss speed , mine was auto clocked by turbo evo at
250.84x15.5 3888.05mhz and im idle atm at 27c ambient 24c. i have never seen 45c+ on load.

for reference im using the sabertooth 990fx MoBo from ASUS
and 1600 vengeance underclocked to 1333, maybe thats the trick... :sarcastic:

hope this helps, just seeing all your temps and bus speeds kinda freaked me out. i want to see atleast 4.2ghz with water, just scared to play with everything to get there

What is your experience with higher bus speeds on that mobo and chip? im using the same and got her to 250.84x15.5 .

think i should tune her down then mult higher?

(not sure if it will work or not)
i want to suggest you a thing to improve your pc's performance in single threaded (or less threaded) apps

so here goes the suggestion
( i call it partial overclock)
1. overclock only 1 core of your cpu (so as to keep tdp in limit), i think that you can go above 5ghz easily for that core
thats all

and then run some single threaded benchmarks at that core, and compare them with i5
and i think you can beat i5 (full overclock) in single threaded task.

I have 8120 on Asus M5A99X Evo and when I let the Auto OCer do the work, it sets me up same as yours. 3.888mhz @ 250.8x15.5, I have an Antec Kuhler 920 so my idle is between 14 to 19c and up to 27c when loaded.

I'm new to OC'ing and has always wondered why my Kingston HyperX 1600 was only showing 1333 in the bios.

check to make sure this isnt te max mem bus for your motherboard, i was using an ASUS M5A97 and 1600 vengeance ram which was under clocked to 1333 in the bios due to bus bandwidth. i just got the sabertooth 990FX which is much better.

The 99x Evo can get up to 2000mhz. I read somewhere (I forgot already, been doing a lot of research for OC) that I need to manually adjust it to reach 1600 as some mobo defaults at 1333mhz.

Here's the link to my mobo
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A99X_EVO/#specifications

Here's the link to my RAM, I bought 2 set of this (16gb 4gbx4)
