Ok so purchased a FX8120 and it arrived yesterday, im using a M5a97 LE R.2 (well was, see below)

I applied Arctic Silva paste and used my CNPS8X HSF.

Idle temps were around 50 and load temps rose to 80+. I switched to the stock fan and results were slightly better but even in windows the fan was at full speed at over 5k rpm!

After a bit of googling..... it seems the M5A97 is an old MOBO and could suffer from voltage issues. The bios was years out of date, silly me applied the bios update and the PC powered down 50% into the update ..... dead mobo.

Ordered a new mobo that arrives tomorrow, am I silly to assume the mobo is responsible for poor temps ?

Side of case is off so not an airflow issue

Err, yeah it sounds like the mobo was needlessly pushing the CPU, Those temps are high even for the stock CPU fan.

Just be sure to update the BIOS as soon as you get it up and running, 50 idle is bad, but not dangerous.

So the HSF and cpu are compatable? HSF cools up to 120w, the 8120 is a 125w processor. Shouldnt be that much of an issue. Its not clocked at all
