hi i am running an fx8350 with 16gb ddr3 ram and a 970 gaming board and its dying. im looking to upgrade and was going to go for ryzen 7 1700x but the cheapest build i could find was £550 my budget doesn't look like its going to stretch that far now. any suggestions for a cheaper upgrade path would like comparable performance or better if i can for between £300-£400 everything else in my system is fine for the build i have a corsair 650w gold plus psu a define c case and samsung ssds etc so its just core bundle. thanks

You can always go with Intel too with same performance (except multi-core usage for production work) with a reduced cost. Best part about Intel chip is that when your GPU dies, you can use the on-board graphics (Intel UHD 630) to continue using your PC. No such convenience with AMD chip since it lacks on-board graphics.

The Raven Ridge APU's like the 2200g and 2400g have Vega igpu that's also really good. Only issue currently with AM4 is that only Ryzen is fully supported on b360/x370, it's totally pot-luck whether you get a bios that needs updating a Raven Ridge cpu and most definitely for the Ryzen+. Only the x470 currently are pretty much guaranteed to have support for all 3. It's only because amd has released those cpus in a short time period and vendors still have stock from prior to cpu release.

For plug-n-play without messing with the bios lottery at all, Intel is the better option.
