FX8350 overheating problem

Hi all - I'm running this on a MSI 970A-G46 board. Recently it stopped booting so I went into the BIOS. The first thing I noticed was the CPU was rapidly heating up, all the way to 82C within a minute of me switching the PC on. Does anyone have any ideas? I've reseated and CPU with new paste, still the same result. CPU fan seems to running fine. Also I have never tried to OC or mess with the BIOS settings in any way. Thanks

Solution

Probably your motherboard. From what I've heard it's vrms and capacitors aren't that great, and the 8350 uses a lot of power (TDP of 125w).

My recommendation would be to just go to a new platform. You can get a low end ryzen or coffee lake for quite cheap, which will give you much better performance than your current setup, and (especially in the case of ryzen) a good upgrade path.

I'm assuming you're on auto voltage. Check the vcore of your cpu through the BIOS, and see if the voltage is higher than it should be (I believe the default voltage is around 1.375v).

Did you clean the cpu heatsink of fluff when you reseated it??.

I would go further than lewis, I suggest you check ALL the settings in BIOS, especially multiplier setting/cpu speed; and perhaps reset them all to default if you are concerned about any of them.

The cpu temperature shown is the average of all cores, actual core temps can be a fair bit higher, I would be worried that the cpu has fried; AMD cpus dont really work well about 55C, so 80+ may well have damaged it.

If all the settings seem ok, you reset the BIOS, and are still having issues, you may have malware/a coin miner. Get hold of some stand-alone AM and AV programs on a USB stick and boot into Safe Mode to run them.

I downloaded an update of a trusted program that had been hacked to include a miner; my cpu went straight to 100% all cores and temps started shooting up; luckily for me, my water cooling system was enough to stop it reaching critical levels, so I could identify and stop it.
(I stress tested the water cooler with 100% all cores to set the max over-clock months before).

Thanks for this. Moving down the road from here a bit: if the CPU has fried is there any way I can work out what did it? Wouldn't want to get a new CPU just to have it fry again!

Solution

If you've been on that voltage for a while there is a chance it could have caused damage, especially with your motherboard.

1.4 is about the maximum voltage recommended; it is usually only needed for high GHz overclocks; they only time I pushed a FX cpu above 1.4, it was to achieve 5GHz.

Normal is about 1.375v.

I know it doesnt sound like a huge difference, but the max limit for the chip is only about 1.5v.

It sounds as if you might have Auto-tune enabled; this will auto set voltage upto certain limits; if the cpu cooler isnt the best, and it was set up when the room temperature was lower, it might be too much now, and need dialling back, or switching off.

I think I'll go and get a new motherboard and CPU. Thank you so much! This has been giving me so much trouble and your feedback really helps.

No worries. Best of luck in your future purchases!
