Ah yes, the old patent infringement strategy. What bullshit. Do they think
we are so stupid we don't know the cart is the profit point in inkjet
marketing, not the printer? Hmmmn, rebates abound on printers, but none to
be found for OEM carts. Thirds forever!

I'll trash my CX5400 and get a brand that has compatible cart when it no
longer has compatible cart. I don't mind to pay a little bit more to buy OEM
cart, but, come on, several times? $50-60 for 100-200 pages of light print?
Give me a break!

What makes you so sure that it is not true? Do you believe that patent
infringement is to be tolerated?

Of course not. Were I an inventor (I'm not), I'd be plenty pissed if someone
ripped off an idea I had, especially if I patented it. You and I both know
that's *not* why this lawsuit has been filed. Anytime a big tech company
sees its market hegemony threatened, it trots out its legal staff to find a
way to stop the 'transgressor' in court, usually because it can't stop them
in the market place. If ya can't beat 'em (pricewise), sue 'em.

I don't know. From the news report it seems to me that Epson's patents
on the ink cartridges has been infringe upon.

If the 'transgressor' has respected Epson's patents then they would
not have trotted out their legal staff.

I am a firm believer in protection of intellectual property. It is true,
however, that many large companies know that they can sue smaller firms and
either break them or intimidate them financially with legal costs. It is
also true that China has been lax in enforcing intellectual property rights.
Hopefully, third party manufacturers have altered the cartridge designs
enough to avoid infringement.

No. But this looks very much like a moral abuse of the patent system.

How would you feel if you bought a car only to find you were firced to buy
that same make of gas because it had been designed to include a spurious
patented detail that wasn't included in any of the advertised product
details? Something that had no real effect on the operation of the car but
which was only included to stop you filling up with cheaper gas.

How would you feel if gas was not regulated by the government and you
had all these aftermarket hawkers ruining your car by supplying
unbranded inferior gas. Maybe ink should be regulated like gas and
generic drugs.
