if the OS still thinks it is still there.... then it will still try to write to it if it was removed.

G drive is a western digital I am trying to add with the two Seagate partitations.

You can diable the write cache, by right clicking the drive in Device manager. The option is worded differently based on the chipset of your computer.

Disabling write cache will have the drive write immediately to the drive with no delay. So if you are ready to disconnect the drive, the cache will always be empty and everything already written to the drive.

Disabling the write cache will only help to prevent most delayed write failures. It can still happen if the device is removed before the non-cached event (writing) is interrupted. Ten to fifteen seconds after a write operation is completed should be sufficient to assure a successful write operation. This happens to me all the time on XP SP3 when I pull a USB flash drive from the port immediately after copying files from the flash drive to the hard drive. (In that case it doesn't really cause any problems, although you may get error warnings for the flash drive when it is inserted into another PC or the same PC again.)

...but that doesn't guarantee that it's always safe to remove the drive. If a program has a file open on the drive then disconnecting it could still cause corruption. Whether you disable write caching or not the safest course is to always use the "safely remove drive" icon in the system tray. That won't close any open files, but it will tell you that the drive can't be removed if there are any.

When I try to remove my external hard drive, it says the device is not ready to be removed, to try again. Nothing is running from the hard drive. All files are already stored on my computer hard drive. What's causing this? Also, am I safe to remove the external HD when I shut down my computer? That's usually what I do. This seems to be happening more often than not. Do you think the HD is going bad?
