Question G-Sense Error Rate on New HDD

I'll be honest, I'm rather lost from looking at Speccy, and I'm still not sure what I'm looking at. So I just bought a Seagate Exos (ST8000NM0055) 8tb Drive off Amazon brand new, and over the course of full formatting the drive (Currently at 86% as of writing this), it has accumulated in Speccy a "real value" of over 900 next to G-sense error rate. It's only been on for ~10 hours. Should I Return the drive or is this some sort of fluke? I also got data from CrystalDiskInfo, if that helps any. Both seem to say it's in "Good" health, I'm just not so sure...

The G sense errors are where there are errors incurred by shock from vibration/drops etc. Typically in some drives, these sensors can be incredibly sensitive.

There could a few easons for this:
  • The drive is in fact defective and has a large error rate - in which case return the drive.
  • The sensor for the drive could be faulty - this is typically seen when the G sense error rate is very high despite the drive being new - if so, you can return the drive anyway as they can give you a fully functioning one.
  • The values were not zeroed on manufacturer release, so it's almost a red herring. But there is no way really to tell.
  • The software itself is not collecting information correctly, which is the same as the point above.

Have you run HD Sentinel and checked what it states as this can sometimes give some more useful information.
Sometimes you might see G sense errors correlate with reallocated or bad sectors. I'd put my bets on a faulty sensor with the number that high.

Thanks for the reply, I just ran HD Sentinel and it states the drive is in "Perfect health". I believe you are probably correct and it's a bad sensor, as the number was increasing during the format time. Thank you very much for the help, I greatly appreciate it.
