Hey all, long time no post.

In 2017 I rebuilt my PC using spare parts from a friend's rig with my own PC and assembled it in a case. Long story short I really love my computer, but I made a mistake when buying the memory. I don't know what I was thinking at the time but the G. Skill Aegis DDR4-3000 RAM is too fast for the CPU and motherboard I'm using. The Motherboard and CPU both support a maximum of 2667mhz, which I never really bothered to actually look into until now. I don't know how but I've been getting by running 1x8gb at 1500mhz (according to CPU-Z). I reread the manual for my motherboard, the ASRock AB350 Gaming K4 and on page 22 under Ryzen CPU's it states that a single rank DIMM should be situated on A2 and I had mistakenly had my memory placed into slot B1. So I unplug the Ram and configure it into slot A2... now CPU-Z reads my memory at a steady speed of 1064.1mhz. What...?

Should I just try overclocking the RAM to 2667 since it's what's supported and it's within the designed specifications for the stick? Is there anything I am overlooking here? Thanks for the help.

Solution
Keep in mind, ddr is dual data rate. 1064x2 is 2128. So basically just about the speed you set it for.

I’ve got the AsRock ab350 pro 4, and run bios 7.20 with a ryzen 5900x. Use the xmp profiles the board should pick them right up.

What BIOS version are you on for your motherboard? As for the rams, the platform should be able to do DDR4-3200MHz.
Motherboard Version P.300 - AMD AGESA SummitPI-AM4 1.0.0.6a
Date 07/12/2017

I presume the BIOS is out of date? I don't think I've ever updated the BIOS myself but I will see what I can do!

I presume the BIOS is out of date?
Yes. Gradually work your way to P7.20
Sounds good! The website says;
*** If the current BIOS version is older than P5.40, please update BIOS to P5.40(PinnaclePI-AM4_1.0.0.6) before updating this version.
and other similar messages so I just need to work my way through them? Doesn't seem to hard!

Hmm well I looked ahead and realized since I am running a Summit Ridge CPU I can only go up to BIOS version 5.8 instead of 7.2. If I go past 5.4, I can't revert back and the site recommends if my PC is running normally to not upgrade... well it runs but I'd like to push my RAM up to 2667 to get better performance. I'm not so sure if I should keep messing with the BIOS or not. I am now on P3.40.

Update: I went ahead and updated to 5.80. I looked at the BIOS as well and the OC tweaker tab has the DRAM at 1066mhz despite it detecting it as a 2133mhz stick. This is odd since it also knows its a 3000mhz stick. I tried setting the frequency at 2133mhz in the bios but cpu-z reports the same 1064.1mhz. I'm at a loss here.
