G.Skill DDR2 800 (4-4-4-12) issue...

Greetings all,

I'm having some trouble with 2 sets of 2 x 1GB Dual-Channel G.Skill DDR2 800 6400 (4-4-4-12) Memory. For some reason I can't get both kits (4GB) to run stable on an Abit Fatal1ty F-I90HD mATX mobo @ 2.1volts (2.0 - 2.1 is the rated voltage for the RAM). I was able to get the kits to run stable at 2.3v and have had zero problems since. I am concerned that this may be a problem and will damage the RAM. I'm awaiting a response from G.Skill tech support and have spoken to Abit.

I do get a BSOD/Physical Memory Dump when the RAM is set to anything below 2.3v.

I have tested the RAM and all are ok.

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated! I don't mind keeping the 2.3v, but just want make sure this will not hard the system or the RAM!!

Be interesting to see if G. Skill support answers back saying you have to increase the voltage as you did because you have 4 dimms requiring more voltage to run stable. It's fortunate your mATX board has voltage adjustments for the RAM that go that high. I would say the increased voltage to your RAM will be fine. I don't have a clue as to what ABIT will say. I slightly overvolt my G. Skill RAM as well as an ABIT MB I have with no problem.
 
I was able to speak with Abit and they said the Mobo should run both kits fine @ DDR2 800. They just freaked me out, because they were a little worried about the 2.3v burning up or overheating. I have great airflow in the case with good case temps.

I'm going to try 2.2v again and run Memtest (If I can get it to work 😛).

If you think 2.3v is ok, then I feel a LOT better LOL!

I run 3 GB 2 x 1 GB + 2 x 512 MB G. Skill PC6400 in my ASUS P5B D at 2.25 volts all the time. I have no heat problems and I think it's attributed to the great Case airflow I have. Nine 120 mm fans. I remember speaking to G. Skill some time ago and the support guy told me it was ok to overvolt the RAM I have. I don't remember if we were talking 2.3 volts though. G. Skill support was referring to this RAM:

That's the same exact RAM I have. I have 2 sets of it. The only odd thing is is that they are the same, but one is black under the heatsink and the other green lol. The numbers are all the same though.

I used the online request and they responded very quickly. Then a tech support guy and I exchanged emails. I recently did an online request with Adata, Supertalent and Asus. Their response cam one to two days later! Did you try googling G. Skill 800 number?
 
OCZ has my warranty RMA DIMMS since last Thursday. Still no return info on their site as of now. Their support says they will complete all RMA orders in 72 to 96 hours. Today is the fifth working day OCZ has my RMA'd RAM. Any experience with them?
 
Corsair performed an under warranty RMA on some DIMMS in lightening fashion for me last year. I get a kick out of going on the Corsair and OCZ websites and telling the 'RAM' guy my problem before I am given an RMA authorization. I had to answer at least 40 questions to get my OCZ RMA. I tried the RAM in three MB's and got errors on two. The RAM ran fine in MB 3. I think the MB are touchy about RAM. With all the different chipsets out there 965, 965G, 965Q, etc, it's hard sometimes to get a hold of RAM that 'just works'. I have a socket A board that will run 2 x 256 Corsair PC3200 XMS perfect. If I put the identical XMS 2 x 512 MB, the thing becomes an error machine. I hope to not ask the RAM guy to expalin that one. BUS speeds, PSU, NB voltage, BIOS versions. I returned a MB this morning. I think my RAM and MB are fine, it's just me learning the difference between the G and the Q!
 
I ran both dual channel kits through memtest last eveing and both made it through over 14 passes. I'm assuming this is good lol? The RAM is actually running stable now and I've picked up a DIMM cooler..just in case 😉.
