Hey guys,

Just got a new monitor that has G-Sync in it. I have been testing it and it really does make it look significantly less awful when you dip below 60 FPS, but even at 61 FPS the tearing is really bad.

I have been running it with V-Sync off, but would V-Sync help my situation with the tearing or will it just nerf the G-Sync affect? The only reason I ask is the information online seems very mixed; with a lot of people saying absolutely no to using both at once. However I do remember that you used to be forced to use both at once...

Any solid info would be greatly appreciated!

If G-sync was that bad then why the bleep am I paying such a premium for it?

G-sync should be eliminating that tearing.

In my shoes with your situation I'd be returning that monitor for a refund/ store credit and finding a new one. G-sync is typically more expensive than freesync(i am aware it isn't compatible with your Nvidia based GFX card) and you are obviously dissatisfied.
You can use gsync and vsync togather if you want, vsync will cap fps to refresh rate and gsync will still eliminate tearing if fps falls below 60. However you will still get the associated input lag with vsync and it may stutter if fps falls below 60 with vsync on.

Ideally with gsync I would try to set a game engine fps cap of 60 (or 59 if you still get tearing) instead of vsync if your game has that feature, may require .ini tweaks or a console command if not in the games menu. That or use adaptive vsync in the nvidia control panel with vsync disabled in the games menu, adaptive vsync will disable vsync automatically when fps falls below the refresh rate, then comes back on when fps hits the refresh rate.

A program like riva tuner will also allow you to cap a games FPS. If the game in question has no other way to cap game engine FPS.

Thank you very much for the response!
I think initially I will just throw on V-Sync too... I'm not too bothered about response times, I mostly play quite laid back games. If I ever come across something that needs better, I will set an FPS limit.

What? Gsync will only eliminate tearing when under the refresh rate of the monitor. The only way to eliminate tearing over the refresh rate is to cap FPS or use vsync.

OP i'm sure your monitor is functioning normally no need to worry.

I'm really happy with the G-Sync... It is really good at keeping the game smooth at a bit below 60 FPS which I really like. I was just looking for some advice to stop the tearing above my monitors specified refresh rate, which V-Sync also has fixed.
