GA-7VT600P-RZ : can't reinstall Win XP Pro SP#2

Hi all,

Sorry for my *bad* english, and thanks in advance for your help
and advices.

I've an 7VT600P-RZ MotherBoard, with 1Go RAM, and HDD Maxtor
Diamond Max 10 (SATA 150 HDD), and NEC DVDRW ND-3540A.
Processor is AMD SEMPRON 2600+, socket A, in box.

I've make a first install :
Assembly PC : ok
BIOS : ok PC start at max speed
Original WinXP Pro sp#2 : ok
AV software eTrust : ok
Windows Update : ok
Update from Gigabyte CD-ROM : after many reboot, i've "no system disk"
message

Then, PC don't working... Ok, I'll make new complete install.
And now, MS Windows XP Installation program said me:
(it is something like that, because I've a french version of windows)

I've make these tries:
Clear CMOS
Remove CMOS Battery many minutes
I've try my HDD in another computer, it is ok to install Windows
I've flash my BIOS with latest version: 7VT600-P-RZ F5
I've tried with only 512MB RAM
I've tried with anoter power connector
I've tried with another SATA cable

And nothing, I can't reinstall Windows XP Pro. I've alway the same error
message.

Any idea? Thanks!

Well Christian, if I understand what you are saying, your reinstall of XP
should start with re-formating the HD. MaxBlast shold do that from a Floppy.

The SATA Set-up is set for spanning since you have only one drive.

The Gigabyte CD-ROM has the mother board drivers ( aka 4in1) and they get
installed as soon as you are able to boot from the HD.
No AV software yet.
No XP updates until every thing is running.

Maybe I don't understand the problem.

I assume the F5 BIOS update went ok.

Thansk Jim.

BIOS update F5 seems to be ok. In BIOS, SATA is in IDE MODE for WinXP
recognition (not in RAID mode with driver to be load by F6 in Windows
Installation).

And yes, when I start install from original WinXP Pro sp#2 CD-ROM,
Windows ask me on which partition it to be installed, and then,
say me to format this partition. And then, I've error message
"can't format partition"...

Ok for Gigabyte CD-ROM : if I can reinstall Windows, it is
the FIRST softwares to be installed. Thanks ;-)

you have to copy the RAID folder (Sil3512r or Sil3512) from Gigabyte
disc) and copy to floppy disc as Windows XP dont detect itself if you
use SATA hard drive - if you got the disc with Sil3512 then when you
in blue screen and quick press F6 and put the floppy disc as it begin
to install for set up the Serial ATA hard drive.

It seem that even though you set up BIOS for the SATA IDE mode, XP doesn't
know where to work and load the OS.

Notice on page 10 of the RAID manual ( step(4) ) it appears to say that you
must have a driver to F6 into XP for the SATA port to work in any mode.

Hello,

Is it necessary if I setup my SATA HDD in "IDE" mode in BIOS
(not RAID mode) ?

Because, in IDE mode, windows install program can "see" my HDD, the
difficult is it only that I have error message when I try to format it.

This board doesn't use the SIL3114.

Have you partitioned it with 1 partition? It could be the missing step as it
may do a fdisk and then partition.Then it will format?

Hello,

Is it this manual

?

And I setup my BIOS to have sata HDD in "IDE" mode, not "RAID" mode. In
this case, windows xp program installer see my HDD, I can select it,
delete or create partition, but I have error message when I try to
format it.

What's wrong? 🙁

Yes, I've made an old WIN95 (OSR2) system boot floppy, with FDISK and
FORMAT utilities. With FDISK, I remove all partitions, then I create
new one, and then format it. And I have error message yet "can't format
partition". This message appear at the end of the format process,
like with Windows program intallation.

I think now, after all checks, I have troubles with my SATA controller
in motherboard. I'll try to change my MB because it is in warranty yet.

Is it a good idea?

That old win95 disk will not format in NTFS.

MaxBlast should find the drive and installit.

And many thanks for your help.

I've changed my MotherBoard, and yes, my SATA controller was out of
order.

I've made a new install with this new MB, and all it is ok.
My PC work fine now 😀 (with no F6 floppy driver, SATA in IDE mode).

BTW... Did you replace with the SAME Motherboard .. Same revision and Model?
