Long time lurker, first time poster here looking for some help.

System
Mb: gigabyte GA-H61M-s2p
CPU: i5 2400
Ram: 8GB
GPU: Gtx1060
Is: windows 10

So I have this older system that I have been using at the office with the onboard graphics for a web browser/catch all system. I decided I wanted to take it home and install a gtx1060 6gb I got from a friend for CHEAP and do some at home light CAD work so I don’t have to go to the office for small stuff. Well I did a little research and it seemed as if people were having luck installing this card in i5 2400 systems with similar model motherboards. Never could find anything on my exact model, but I figured since mine was a “higher end board” than some of the other models mentioned that this card would work for me, but I cannot get the system to recognize it. I updated the bios to the most recent version, installed the card and got nothing. It doesn’t even show up in device manager in windows 10. Card powers up, fans spin, lights work, but no output on any of the ports. Tried every DP and both the HDMI and DVI with no luck. I can plug straight into the MB and graphics work fine. I know the card is good because it works in my rig at work. And I know the PCI slot is good because I had an older cheap GPU laying around that worked fine.

Any input would appreciated, even if it’s “that card will not work with that board” atleast I will know.

Also I am not opposed to buying an older cheap MB to use if that’s an option as well. If it won’t work I might end up just building a modern rig to have at home, but I figured this would do what I need it to just fine and save me some coin.

Thanks in advance for any ideas
Mack

There's no reason that the GTX 1060 should not work with the Gigabyte GA-H61M-s2p motherboard. So it isn't a compatibility problem. Do you have a sufficient power supply for the card?
One thing that I noticed; you said you get a display when you connect the monitor into the on-board video. Is that while the gfx card is still in its slot? If so... that might indicate that the card is not seated fully in the slot. Most modern boards disable the iGPU when it sees a card in the PCIe x16 slot.

yes I have an EVGA 750 G3 so I know I have plenty of power, and yes I am still getting video from the on-board video while the GPU is inserted, but I get on board video when my cheap gt430 is installed and working properly as well. I have removed and re-seated the card multiple times with no avail. the only mention of the PCIE slot in the bios is under "advanced bios features" there is a setting labeled "Init Display First" which i have set to PCIEx16.

any other ideas? I also reset CMOS with the jumper and also pulled the battery for a few minutes just in case. I am updated to F7 bios and I dont know what else to do. Maybe I am overlooking something simple but I dont understand how the gt430 works and the gtx1060 is not even recognized with the same bios settings. I will re-seat the card once again when i get home and see if i have any luck, but any other suggestions would be fantastic.

Yep it’s an 8pin and my power supply cables are a 6+2 style end, and I’ve tried 3 different cables to make sure it wasn’t a bad cable

I have not put my meter on the pins, but I am making an assumption (I know thats a dangerous game) based on 2 things.
1. I have tried 3 different cables in 4 different jacks on 2 different power supplys.
2. all the fans and lights are working so I know I am getting atleast some power.

also yes I have tried the card in my main rig at the office in place of my 1080 and it runs fine.
