I have a relative that is having some problems with a 3 or 4 year old computer. While using the sytem it reset. Actually it was not so much a reset as the power to the system stopped. The system would not restart. When the power was pushed the power, exhaust and CPU fan spins up briefly (maybe 0.5 seconds) the lights on the front blink and then everything goes back to a power off state.

I suspected a power supply issue, but replacing the power supply with a larger unit had no effect. Since the computer never starts to boot, does a self check and I never get to a bios screen this seemed like a reasonable try. Are there any other obvious things to try? If not I guess it is a motherboard problem. The moterboard is a GA-k8ns and the processor is a socket 754 athlon 64.

Reset the CMOS jumper. Be sure to unplug the PSU from the wall and remove the battery when you reset the CMOS jumper. Instructions in MB manual. If that does not work, try one DIMM RAM in slot one only. Try each stick as a single. If that doesn't work, be sure the MB speaker header is plugged to a working speaker. Remove ALL the RAM and boot. If the MB does not beep signifying no RAM in the system, you have a MB problem. You might try reseating the RAM and video card in any event.

Thanks. Seems to be a MB. Looks like I will need to get them a new MB processor and ram since the system is old. It is an XP computer, if I put in the new components will XP still work? Sorry for the dumb question, but I have only built new and have not done a major upgrade.

The hard drive with Windows xp installed currently has the MB and system drivers for the Gigabyte K8N MB. Better to do to a fresh install of Windows XP with the new MB, but you could possibly do a 'repair' of the current windows xp with the Windows CD and load the new MB/system drivers. Personally, I would do a fresh install of windows.
