hi i seem to have a problem overclocking my cpu ive only been able to turn my Fsb from 266x9 to 333x9 but only been able to reach 306x9 (2.745ghz) if i change it to x7 or x8 i still cant get pass 306. ive even taken to be tested from the place i got it from and they some how got it pass 306x9 to 315x9 but the northbridge is hitting 90c but nothing else is getting pass 55c. they have tested all the part and tried different psu, ram etc. they have narrowed it down to northbridge but i cant get the mobo changed cause it runs fine when at stock settings. i was wondering if anyone was having the same problem and how they fixed it.

thanks

No fix. The 650i chipset north bridge runs hot and the 650i chipset doesn't work well for overclocking quad-cores. Not surprising, as the 650i was designed as a low-middle end chipset. I've got an Abit 650i board and it's got the same north bridge heat and inability to OC quad cores. At least my e6420 OCs well on it running a 1333MHz FSB.

any idea if i add a cooler on the northbridge like a Thermaltake Extreme Spirit II Cooler if it will allow me to push my FSB up any more?

It will likely help extend the life of your MB, and if you're lucky and have good karma it might help with the FSB, but don't count on it. Basically, the quad core requires twice as much power, etc., and the MB and chipset aren't designed to handle that.

Hi. YOu mentioned that you were able to overclock the e6420 with the 650 - can you tell me how? I am unable to get it to overclock at all, errors out at POST even with the slightest changes. I have a Gigabyte N650SLI-DS4 with an E6420 Core 2Duo/
