Hi,

I need help moving all my data and apps to my main PC as my microserver keeps failing.

I'm just trying to get the most out of my disks if anyone can help?

My setup:
Mobo - GA-Z77X-D3H mobo
1 SSD for my OS
1 3TB drive for my media.
I am going to buy another 3TB drive (same model)

Option 1 - Should I have the OS on the 6Gb/s connector and the 2 3TB drives on the 3Gb/s connectors on the main chip

Option 2 - The OS on the 6Gb/s connector on the main chip and the 2 3TB drives on the 6Gb/s connectors on the Marvell chip?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Solution
SSD's should be on the intel 6GB/s for best performance. The HDD's don't really matter performance wise. You mentioned RAID though I am assuming the Intel RST RAID? If so that only works with the drives on the intel controller.

What are your plans there though?

Sorry for the delayed reply, I've just bough the 2nd 3TB drive and it reminded me I asked the question.

I'm not really sure how the two chips work. Looking at the spec it has
1 x Marvell 88SE9172 chip:2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (GSATA3 6/GSATA3 7) supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices which supports RAID 0 & 1.

1 x chipest 2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (SATA3 0/SATA3 1) supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices which supprts RAID 0,1,5 and 10.

I want 1 SSD for the OS and two spinning disks in RAID for my media.

If that's the case the SSD goes on the Intel 6Gb/s and the other two go on two of the the 3Gb Intel ports. Then you will be able to set them up in a RAID 1 using Intel's RST software. It will may delete everything on the original disk though.

I've just realised the Marvel one is eSATA so that answers my question!

Am I going to lose speed because I don't have 2 spare 6Gb/s?

No. There isn't a spinning disk in the world that will saturate a SATA 3Gb link much less a 6Gb link. SSD's on the other hand can actually saturate a SATA 6Gb link.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
