I am running Windows 98 on a GA7DXR+. As Windows 98 runs through the
Autoexec.bat it comes to the line: LH VIAFMTSR.COM and generates the
following error. "Please enable soundblaster in bios first"

Does anyone know how to do this? I have looked through the Bios setting but
can find no reference in either the manual, or in Bios.

Regards.

Ray.

Ah, using built in sound card then? Look for something that says. AC'97
audio and enable it.

You should be okay then.

This is where I encouter the problem. There are two setting which are used
for the onboard soundchip. Both are accessed under the Integrated
Peripherals menu.

Onboard soundchip - This is set to "Enabled"
AC97 Audio - This ia set to "Auto", the other option being "off"

There are no other audio options that I can find.

Many thanks for your reply.

Ray.

It should be on then. Only other way I can think of is to download the
drivers for the built-in soundcard for windows 98, un-install the old ones,
reboot and then install the new downloaded drivers from gigabytes website.

See if that fixes it. If not, then try the ones on the CD again and follow
the instructions on how to install them from the manual.

Thanks for your advice. I have done all of the things that you have
suggested but still the same result. I am left with sound support for
Windows 98, but not in dos. I am going to keep on working at this problem
but for now I have dug out an old Soundblaster 64 and everything is working
fine.

If anyone knows of a solution for the AC97 sound problem I would be very
grateful.

Again, thanks for your guidance and advice. It is appreciated.

Regards.

Ray.

To be honest. You get better sound from the old Sound Blaster AWE64 than
you would from the onboard sound chip and get better dos support as well.

I've never used the onboard sound chip at all. Got a Sound Blaster Live
1024 in my system and never had problems with it. I would stick with a
proper sound card, much better options and sound quality to be honest. I
don't even think the on board chip is full duplex either so having a decent
card you can record audio as you listen to it. Or in voice chat mode. You
can listen as you talk online at the same time. (If software allows that of
course)
