Galax is not a new brand, they are the merging of two brands. Galaxy (who has been around for a while) and KFA2 joined together and are now known as Galax.
In response to the OP: Guru3D.com did a review of the Galax GTX 970 EXOC Black Edition back in November and did a comparison to a large amount of other video cards.
Compared with the Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970, the Galax did great. They are practically on par with each other. See for yourself! GALAX GeForce...

You really couldn't go wrong with either card honestly. I decided on the Galax, I personally love the design of the card and the performance is great. The choice is up to you. Hope this helps!
I have the Galax EXOC black. awesome. Galax as mentioned, has been around for a long time, since 1994. however they are not big in America, focusing instead (with KFA2) in europe/asia/middle east regions. hence there is not a lot of English knowledge/ support for Galax.
get whatever will excite you the most. if its a $50 difference....its nothing for piece of mind.... in my opinion that is.
