Seen video on running a game on extnl. disc for steam so I can do updates via WiFi and my notebook and run game from gaming PC, but steam doesn't see my install disc (in optical drive) when doing a clean install to external SSD (drive G : ) . I have done a clean Format and downloaded Steam onto it overnight, started to download game via steam and selected drive "G" . It is suppose to see game on disc but I am doing something wrong. Did have it semi working last week but with bugs galore so decided to start all over again but with someone's wisdom as I am really out over my head and I am having withdrawal symptoms from my one and only game (Also Sofia and Serana fight like hell when I'm not around) . So I have drive "G" with Steam on it and looks OK. G:Steam, steamapps, common,Skyrim, installscript.vdf and that’s where it stops. It appears the steam is downloading SR from them and not the disc, Should SR be copied here? NB I am doing this initial setup via dial-up from home to get that out of the way, then once SR is on the SSD and steam verifies it, I will go to town and do the updates via a free wifi cafe. other wise the update will take 50 to 200 days to complete .. but then it always dumps me.
I think Skyrim Disc needs to be cut pasted to a folder on the SSD? but I tried the common folder with no luck. Can't remember what I did last time either.

FYI Just getting steam to download onto SSD took 12 hours (did a backup too) reason for doing this is I had Skyrim on my gaming PC (which has no internet at all) and have had to jerry-rig a very expensive way to keep steams "paranoia checks" happy. Now I discover that I can run SR from an external SSD so I can update via my notebook at an internet café that has WiFi. then at home I just need a cheap connection to recommence and avoid steams compulsory updates I can't afford since they have changed their frequency of checking the game. This will save me $20 ago.
Both PC's using Windows 7 and SSD is 150 GB USB3
I have tried to follow Linus and his method but it seems he copied a running game to the SSD. (?) Please help as I am seriously running out of steam.

Solution
To do this:

1. Install Steam onto the hard drives of the laptop and computer, not the external.
2. After Steam is installed, connected the SSD that has (or will have) the games to the computer(s)
3. In the upper left of the Steam window, click the "Steam" button and choose Settings.
4. In the Settings window, click Downloads, and the Steam Library Folders.
5. Click Add Library Folder, and create a Steam Library folder on the SSD. (or choose the already created folder)

This should allow it to work.
You should just be able to go to the disc and double click on the autorun.exe. It should start the install from disc thing automatically. Not sure it will actually let you play it though as it will still want to download any updates that were released since the disc was created (which is a lot).

For future reference, backup your games with the backup and restore games function within Steam to avoid this entire situation.

Solution
Thanks guys, yeah I went wrong with putting steam on the SSD. (sleep deprivation, lol) Did the 1-5 and then ran the disc with Skyrim.exe and selected G: Steam and it's now doing the update. Saved 58 days of download when selecting download from Steam Library lol.
One curious thing is that on the SSD under Steam,Steamapps, common,Skyrim it's empty. but under Steamapps, downloading, 728850, Data is Skyrim. ?? I take it this is temporary while the update is completing.
