Gamer desktop vs ultrabook with egpu

Hello.
I want to get my first gamer rig, with about 1500$ buget.
Im really debating between a desktop to a laptop with egpu.
My main requirement is good gaming,
and I know I can get from a desktop, but how much different will it be with a laptop w/egpu?
Cus you can get the same graphics card, and with todays thunderbolt it will be really easy to just hook up the gpu to the laptop, plus I get a good new laptop which is also very nice, that it is somewhat portable gaming rig (which could be vry helpful for me) , which I could never get with a desktop.

So what do u guys think? Which is better?

I can always build much better desktop PC for same money as a laptop, on any level. For (semi)portability consider Micro ATX system http://www.ign.com/articles/2018/04/20/the-best-microatx-motherboards-for-gaming those can be just as powerful although with fewer equipment as any full size desktop PC.
