Games and Sound

When I boot up a game in windows 7 it moves the volume slider to about 25%. It turns down my music as well. This causes me to have to turn up my volume way high, but if I have other sounds (like an IM incoming) it will be super loud. Is there a way to disable this automatic turning down of sound?

unless there is an option in the game that will let you set the sound manually then i see no way.

What I've been doing is running the game, then minimizing and moving the volume up in the mixer. Some games are very unhappy with me minimizing though, so I was trying to find the root cause.

i am not in front of vista/windows 7 right now but there is an option in control panel under sound that allows you to choose if programs have exclusive control of sound. its just an option you can check off.
