Question Games crash unless I underclock new 6800 XT

I have a brand new PowerColor 6800 XT Red Dragon and it's performing OK, but unless I underclock the core down from factory 2399 to 2275 I will get very quick crashes in CP2077, Jedi Survivor and sometimes D4.

This is with voltage at stock (1150mV) & power limit +15%.

I have two 8-pins (dedicated) connected to the card and the PSU is a Corsair RM 750e.

Is this just a bad draw of the silicon lottery? Even with the card downclocked it performs great, playing these games at Ultra settings smooth as butter so perhaps I'm getting hung up the numbers.

Edit: Including system specs:
Mobo: MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI
CPU: Ryzen 7600
Cooler: Be Quiet! Black Rock 4
GPU: PowerColor RX 6800 XT - Red Dragon
DRAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x16GB 5600
PSU: Corsair RM750e

FWIW Powercolor specs show a maximum boost of 2310 for that model so it may just be poor silicon. That being said I'm pretty sure you should be able to get a fair bit higher than that for the 6800 XT in general.

Are you using the OC BIOS or the standard one?

I'd suggest giving it a try without a raised power limit just to see how things perform. I haven't done a lot of testing on mine (have the same model) as I'm running it on a 650W PSU and it's in a spare machine so I don't have a lot of direct suggestions to add.

My 6700XT also crash pretty hard on +15. It is the luck of the lottery to me, do you try dead stock?
I've tried dead stock in both the OC and Quiet state. Runs extremely hot in both scenarios, fans don't spin much.

I've tried both, but I've been keeping it in OC while I tweak the settings. I'll give it a go with default PL.

How hot is it running? It should be in the upper 60s-mid 70s unless the room you're in is really hot. You might need to adjust the fan curves if they're not kicking in as this could easily be part of the crashing.

Thanks, might play around more with the fan settings. I'm trying to undervolt it to control temps, but it becomes unstable very quickly. Somtimes it doesn't respect the fan curves and seen it creep up to mid 90s, I have to re-open MSI Afterburner for it to kick back. However, if it's underclocked it won't crash even while hot, it will just throttle itself.

i wonder if its the power supply if you are running the +15% OC on it the poor 750w cant handle it ..
I checked the 6800xt red dragon specs on the powercolor site and yes its recommends a 750w still wonder it its to much for it !!..
or are you trying to OC it in silent mode ?

Also what is adrenalin overlay showing you temps wise ?

What else are you OC ing clock speed mem speed and is you fan curve to week and its throttling !!

the 6800xt red devil has the more power connectors but also the bigger cooler !!

That seems way too hot even for a hot room there may be something wrong with the card/cooler unless it's purely fan related. You definitely don't want a card running against the thermal wall if you can avoid it as it will wear down faster, especially power delivery.

when i say temps adrenalin overlay metrics show both junction temps and card temps my 7900xtx red devil runs in cyberpunk at 50 to 70c under full load smaller case plenty of fans ..
but the junction temp hovers around the 88c to 100c so i usually get away with a -100mv under volt to bring the junction temp down ..

same when i run port royal benchmark i max fans undervolt it and max to the +15 power limit ..

another option is to drop the power down by 5 and check the fan curve !!

i think the to aggressive +15 OC is the cause !!

all AMD gpus will get the +15 power boost even if its at times to low for how well the card is engineered but sometimes it could be in reverse so the red dragon is not a red devil the cooler is smaller and so the + 15 is just cooking it a bit to much to be stable !!

What's your max clock with the -100mv undervolt? I can do -100, but I have to drop my clock down to around 2000, which just seems wrong against a rated boost of 2350+.

I've tried between Power Limit between +0 and +15, I know there's plenty of headroom in the PSU so I wanted to make give the GPU that room to eliminate crashes do to power draw.

different gpu when i do a port royal run i usually do max 15 -150mv and boost the mem clock to 2700 and the clocks to 3300k with a min of 2800 2900 after my last run i it was consistent 3k mem clocks 2900 3k clocks with max fan speed..

normally for gaming i just under volt it and let it do its own thing so i dont pay much attention to rated clock speeds

just tried borderland 3 im seeing 2300 to 2600 stock which is about right for the powercolor spec sheet on there site !!

temp was 59c and the junction temp was around 88 but i only had it running for a few minutes !!

the only thig i can do to maybe help is try my 5800x3d 6900xt red devil build but i have to set it back up to the tv etc etc will take some time but that might give a better understanding..

what i do know is if its unstable its a to aggressive OC for the card so lower the power limit and drop the volts by -50mv

I won't put you through that but thank you for the offer and the advice! I won't be able to try any more settings until tomorrow evening. I'll play around with lowering the power limit and trying to get the temps down through fan curve to see where I can get. I don't even really want to over clock the core, I just want to not have to underclock it
