Games freeze/stutter/CPU Spike on my Laptop

When I'm playing games on my laptop, like GTA III, Half-Life 1 and 2, which are games that aren't supposed to have performance problems with these days computers.

My problem is that the game is running very smoothly but it randomly freezes and stutters. I think this is related to my CPU. Why do I think this?

Well, I opened my Task Manager before starting my game and I left it open. Then I started the game and played for a while. When the game freeze, I went back to the desktop and noticed some weird spikes on the cpu usage.

Is it actually a CPU problem?

I hope you can help me :)

GTA 3 may be old game but its CPU and RAM intensive plus your GPU is not the best, there is allot of AI to be controlled in same time. And HL2 is assassin for laptops because its on Source (source may be old engine but its still graphically and CPU,RAM intensive). And HL1 has random loading times that are unnoticeable but on weaker PC you can see them and feel them XD

That's like a 4 year old video chip, and not a good one at that. Your processor is also a bit old. Your only like a 4 year old system. GTA4 is the worst ported game ever and can bring a modern day system to it's knee's because it's not coded well, nevermind a 4 year old laptop at that. Your system is too old.

The spikes on the cPU indicate times when more CPU power was called for by the system. This could mean an increase in screen activity (more players or mobs)

But the point here is that I'm trying to play old games like Half-Life and GTA 3, games that ran perfectly well on my 2003 computer that has 500mb Ram I think 😛 . And I know that GTA IV is a really bad port, but I dont even try to play that game. I can play it on my PS3. I use my laptop to play more old school games, and with this problem it kinda of sucks :/

But is there any way to fix that? I think I remember my laptop playing these games just fine. And sometimes it gets worse and some times it doesnt even happen at all :/

GTA 3 may be old game but its CPU and RAM intensive plus your GPU is not the best, there is allot of AI to be controlled in same time. And HL2 is assassin for laptops because its on Source (source may be old engine but its still graphically and CPU,RAM intensive). And HL1 has random loading times that are unnoticeable but on weaker PC you can see them and feel them XD

I guess you are right. I'll stick with what I have and try to do tweaks here and there, but I've been almost 2 years searching for a solution and I never got it. Thanks for everyone for helping me and if you still think you can help do it but for now I'm finished with this :)
