Question Games keep crashing on a brand new build ?

Hello! Built my first PC over the past couple of weeks, but can’t get 3D mark graphics tests to complete without crashing. This problem carries over to games like Elden Ring and Overwatch, too – any time I boot a game, it freezes and crashes within a couple of minutes, if not immediately. Event viewer points me to nvwgf2umx.dll, but graphics updates and DDUs don’t solve the problem. Also note, outside of games, everything works fine. No BSOD and system is stable other than an occasional Chrome crash. Can anyone help point me in the right direction? PC Specs and the sweep of tests I’ve completed are found below.

  • CPU: i7-13700k – used from ebay.
  • GPU: ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER OC
  • RAM: gSkill Ripjaw DDR5 6800mHz 2x16gb
  • Mobo: MSI Tomahawk z790 Wifi DDR5 – open box from ebay
  • Storage: Samsung 990 Pro 2Tb
  • AIO: Corsair h115i elite capellix xt
  • Case fans: 4x Corsair AF120
  • PSU: Corsair 750e
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro

Completed tests:

GPU:
  1. Checked temps. Max 60C under load.
  2. Rolled back drivers to previous rev.
  3. Disabled WIFI, DDU drivers in safe mode, update drivers with local file (WIFI still disabled).
  4. Checked electrical connections/reseated GPU.
  5. Installed my GPU in friend’s system – WORKS.
  6. Installed my GPU and SSD in friend’s system – WORKS.
RAM:
  1. Ran Passmark. All OK except Database Operations = failed
  2. Ran Memtest86
  3. Ensured Ram is in slots 2 & 4.
  4. Disabled/ enabled XMP on RAM. Tried 6800mHz, 5600Mhz and 4800mHz.
  5. Tried just one stick of ram. Then the other.
  6. Tried a different set of RAM (corsair vengeance RGB DDR5 6000mHz).
CPU:
  1. Ran Passmark. All OK except Physics = failed
  2. Checked idle temps. ~36C. max ~60C under load
Mobo:
  1. Updated BIOS.
OS:
  1. Started on windows 11 Pro. Clean reinstall Windows 11 Pro from windows installation media.
  2. Clean installed Windows 10 Pro.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Disabled WIFI, DDU drivers in safe mode, update drivers with local file (WIFI still disabled)
When installing your GPU (and pretty much any)drivers, manually install the latest driver in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator.

Updated BIOS
For the sake of relevance, can you please pass on the BIOS version you're on at this moment? Did you clear the CMOS after you'd verified that the BIOS was successfully updated?

Storage: Samsung 990 Pro 2Tb
Check to see if the drive has any firmware updates pending using Samsung's Magician app.

I did not do this, I'll try it when I get home, but if this was the issue I don't think my drive would work in my friend's computer with my GPU. Though he does have a DDR4 system rather than my DDR5

I'm on the most recent bios- 7D91vHA. I verified that it was successful, but I did not clear the CMOS though. I'll try a reflash with CMOS clear later today.

I'll check this as well, but again my drive works in my friends computer. I know that test swaps most of the components but shouldn't it consistently not work?

And thank you, I ran out of things to even try and you gave me new ideas.

Update? Similar experiences here. I also have 990 pro SSD and 4070 super! From my research, in general it seems like DDR5, 13 and 14th gen CPUs, and the 4000 series super cards are extremely finicky and buggy especially when paired together.

I RMA 'd the cpu and everything is fine now
