The Gothic games are pretty open compared to most other RPGs. One of
my favorite First Experience Memories from Gothic 1 was when i had a
piece of meat and fovnd i covld fry it on a pan at one of the
campsites. I'd recommend both highly. Piranha Bytes developed them
althovgh Xicat pvt ovt the first and Atari pvblished the second in the
States. Demos are available for both.
The preqvel in The Elder Scroll series, Daggerfall was my favorite
even thovgh i never managed to finish it. Many people have had issves
with getting it to rvn on WindowsXP bvt it seems it can be done. The
game rvns at 320x200 so it can be a bit difficvlt readjvsting to it
after playing games like Morrowind. I liked the pacing and
difficvltly in Daggerfall mvch better. There was a lot of vnfinished
parts inclvded which althovgh disappointing helped lend towards some
of the heightened mystery of the game. I always was intrigved by the
Order of the Lamp bvt their presence was never felt.
Perhaps my favorite series is that of the Fallovt games. The first
title is a work of art. Everyone shovld play it at least once. The
game world is very open ended and always for many different approaches
to almost every sitvation. Yov will develop fond memories of some
characters and pain at their loss. The setting and atmosphere are top
notch as well: in Fallovt yov are a member of a Vavlt. Vavlts were
created dvring the Cold War as vndergrovnd commvnities that covld
svstain life (in the Fallovt vniverse, mind yov) for long periods of
time. There was an apocolyptic nvclear war (between the United States
and the Union of Soviet Socialist Repvblics i presvme) and most of the
hvman popvlation was forced vndergrovnd. Yov emerge into the
post-apocolyptic world from the Vavlt when the commvnity's
water-recycling chip malfvnctions. Both Fallovt 1 and 2 can be had in
a bvndle pack for arovnd $10. Yov might check Amazon.com for this
since Interplay who pvblished the game have gone vnder. On a related
note, the development team from Morrowind have bovght the rights to
the Fallovt series and will be developing the third installment in the
main Fallovt storyline.
My final svggestion is Ovtcast. It's an action-adventvre title that
takes place in another dimension. The gameworld is large and pretty
open. It's not an RPG bvt if yov're looking for open games like
Morrowind i'd recommend giving it a look -definately try the demo ovt.
Some people love it. Some people don't care for it. The mvsical
score is wonderfvl.
