[SOLVED] Games start lagging ~25 minutes into playing

Hi,

I've had this problem for a few months now where my laptop will suddenly start lagging about 25ish minutes into playing. It'll be smooth and constant around 60 fps, with little to no lag or stuttering, and then suddenly the fps will drop to around 30 with no warning, and start to fluctuate a lot more. Before the problem arose I could easily play the games I play now at smooth fps no lag. I've tried updating drivers, reinstalling windows, setting my nvidia graphics card as preferred on both Windows and the nvidia control panel, all with no luck. I've noticed using MSI afterburner that the GPU temp goes up towards 80 ° C and the GPU utilisation stays below 100%, until the drop happens, when the temperature starts decreasing and the utilisation spikes all the way up to 100% and stays there, and the CPU clock speeds decrease all the way to a third of their previous values. I've attached some screenshots of what the monitor shows here.

Your CPU temperature would be a great information to have here. According to your graphs, it looks like the CPU throttles down at some point and that's usually because overheating.

I gave it another clean, and here's the new temperature info. I was wondering though, if the CPU temperature is the issue, why does the FPS not return to normal once the CPU has cooled down?

Laptop is overheating.
Get your laptop a laptop cooling pad.

For anybody who comes across this thread, I finally figured out what the main issue was. Overheating was a factor, but the actual problem was to do with turbo boost. I had turbo boost disabled by setting the battery plan of my laptop to have a maximum processing power state of 95%, so that my laptop would hopefully stay away from higher temperatures and would last longer overall. This worked fine for about 2 years, but for some reason after that keeping turbo boost turned off was causing the laptop to throttle itself when it got too hot. Changing the battery plan to allow for turbo boost again fixed this problem!
