So i have been playing Far Cry 3 on max settings and it has been running flawlessly, I decided to pick up Ryse son of Rome and Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor, And when i start to play them (Max settings) i have no lag for about 5-10 minutes, then all of a sudden it becomes almost unplayable. very choppy and stutters nonstop. I kept the resolution at 1920x1080 and put the graphics settings on low and the exact same thing was happening, I went back to play far cry 3 after this started to happen and then it started to lag as well, not as bad as the other 2 games but still very choppy. Not sure what the problem could be. This is a computer i built myself in September, and it was the first one i have done before so i could have made a mistake or something, but anyways my specs are

I7 4790 Haswell
Gigabyte Gaming 3 Z97x
ASUS GTX 660 DirectCU II OC 2GB
8GB G Skill Ram

I heard from a friend it could be overheating, but im not sure what temperatures are considered high, I have a Corsair H101 Water cooler for my CPU, I didnt add any extra thermal paste though.

These are screenshots of the temperatures while running Shadow of Mordor, I ran it until it started to get a bit laggy, closed it and ran it again, http://gyazo.com/fee095798afb32d94fd0f002187c7609

My question is, Is my rig good enough to be running these games on max settings?
I plan on upgrading my graphics card to a GTX970 within a month or two btw.

I'm a little confused. Are you saying you didn't use any thermal paste when you mounted to water block to the CPU?

Your GPU may be little weak for Max settings. download the Gforce experience and let it configure the game to optimal settings for you. Also use a program like Percision X or Afterburner to keep tabs on heat, create a fan curve, and set target FPS. That might help.

Otherwise your rig looks pretty good. I'm assuming you have a quality and adequate PSU and good air flow with the right fans in the enclosure as well.

And the drivers are up to date?

You are thermal throttling that cpu.

Re-install the cpu cooler, that is way too hot.

Also a 660 is not enough to be running max settings at 1080p.

Solution

Im saying that i just mounted the waterblock to the cpu, i never added any paste to it, I was told by a friend that their should be a little bit on the block from the factory and it should be ok, The PSU im using is a Corsair 750CXM And i never added any fans to my rig, I have an NZXT H440 Which already has a lot of fans in it so i should be fine. Ill try to update my drivers.

My question is, If i could run FC3 for example on max settings about 4 days ago, after i started to have problems with Shadow of Mordor and Son of Rome, why am i having trouble with far cry 3 now?

What should i do differently when re installing the Cooler? Besides adding Paste of course,

Make sure the block is clean and unobstructed - like there's no sticker on the bottom of the block. Don't over do the paste. Some say thin lines in an X pattern, some say a drop in the middle, some like me put a the paste on the CPU then smooth it into a thin coating with a semi-rigid item like a small piece of card board.
Then just reinstall the block. You should be good to go.
