Gaming - 965 or 3570k

Hi, i just got BF3 and I realized, wow, my CPU is ***.
A 965 is much cheaper, will go with my mobo, and all will be well.
A 3570k does not go with my mobo, and will cost me so much more money to upgrade.

I've seen mixed answers for them like "ohh, you'll be fine with the 965 if you OC"
And some like.. "That CPU came out when my grandma was born, don't buy that crap."


Please help me out, my GPU is a 7870.
I know I'm bottlenecking in BF3, all settings on low and I get terrible lag..

If you're on about the Phenom II 965 then I'd say it's an old chip and i'd rather the 3570k because of hyper threading and Intel being better!

Bottom line is, All of the inter core I5/I7 will outperform a Phenom II x4. HANDS DOWN!
For the extra money it's definitely worth it.

Well that's up to you, but personally I would settle with the 3570k since it is much faster than the Phenom II X4 965. Though don't think I'm biased, I own the Phenom II 955 but I know for a fact it can't keep up with the 3570k, I am just being honest. You could also settle with the FX-8350 if you REALLY don't want to spend money on a new motherboard, though you will need to make sure there is a bios update that supports the FX series and the TDP of the motherboard is 125 watts or greater.

if your on a budget a 965 will be fine overclock it a bit if you need to just make sure you get an aftermarket cooler, even something like a cm212 for 30 bucks is a massive improvement, yeah the i5 will monster the phen2 but with that gpu you wont notice to much difference, just dont get one of those new *** bulldozer chips and you'll be right

I'll be honest with you, and some poeple are probably gonna shoot me down for this, but I had a 965, and got a 3570K. On my system the upgrade made a difference, but not all that great (in gaming, FPS wise particularly BF3). If you can get a 965 for around 70-80 bucks I'd say just get it and plop it in, easy cheap upgrade, big difference. If you're about replacing your mobo and getting an i5, whilst definitely worth it (did make my system feel quite a bit faster), the almost 3-4x you'll be spending might not be. It's really up to you, if you have the money and willing to spend it go get the 3570K, otherwise if you don't or can't justify it the 965 will be plenty for your gaming needs (assuming decent graphics, don't throw that out of the equation).

I probably do plan on OC, but not much on SLI. When I'm older and get a job I can worry about that. (if you have money to SLI you have money to get a new board..)

How good is the board? Is it considered mid-high end?

I would say upper mid-end - board supports a lot of graphics options & has a GREAT chipset, but the one feature it lacks that keeps it from being considered high end is the lack of 2 x16 PCI-e slots. It has two, but they don't work as x16 together - its either x16/x8, x8/x8, or x16/x0 - but still a GREAT board for the price you pay.
