Hello peoples,

I'm currently about to build a new system, and I mainly use it for gaming and audio production.

I was initially thinking of basing the new system around an I7-6700K, but I'm not sure whether AMD may be a better choice for the price.
For me a 6700k is almost £300, whereas I can get a Ryzen 7 3700x for less than this.

I know Intel is usually better for single core performance, but as I'm using my machine for audio production (mixing, recording etc) I would also benefit from having more cores.

What would be the best CPU option for around £250-300?

Thanks :)

Solution
6700k is dated stuff. its 100% ripoff, that CPU is not worth 150£.
Paying 300£ for 9700k would be fine, as its MSRP was around that.
Just so you know:
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-9700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-6700K/4030vs3502
9700k vs 6700k is 20-60% faster AND those benchmarks are skewed by MELTDOWN so 6700k is slower than what benchmarks show.

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-3700X-vs-Intel-Core-i7-6700K/4043vs3502
so 3700X AMD is better than 6700k on all fronts now, even gaming.

For your usecase its the workstation score, so 6700k is now ~57% and 3700X is ~97% (of perfect workstation)
and again that number is offset by meltdown patches so accual number next to 6700k is ~50-55'ish %

Thanks so much for your reply, super helpful. So how does the 9700K and Ryzen 3700x compare?

User benchmark says the intel is slightly better but again is having double the threads worth it in production for slightly less performance in gaming?

Thanks :)

Exactly. Intel wins if you pair it with 2080 ti or titan, on all others GPU's and is 1-3 FPS behind. But with double threads, if you edit loooong audio/video, like applying noise reduction effect time will be literally halved.
I edited kindergarten event once where I had to clean up the parents talking. Threads were godsend, I would go mad if it took any longer

I've got a 1060 atm which I'll upgrade later at some point, but I'm not running anything over 1080p anyway. I think I'll go AMD because its cheaper and it'll be better all round for the sake of a few fps lost on gaming.
